Babies: 9 - 12 Months

BLWers - how to convince family?

I'm interested in trying baby led weaning, perhaps in conjunction with spoon feeding (if that is OK), but my DH is freaked out by it and I suspect our family would be too. Was your family or SO supportive and how did you help them understand what it is?

Re: BLWers - how to convince family?

  • Maybe I need more info, but why would BLWing be weird? On the Catholic moms forum I'm on the majority of the BFing moms let their babies self wean and many are still nursing 2 yr olds. At that age they are usually only nursing once, maybe twice anyway. IFind some good information about it and let DH read to better get him on board. What are his arguments against it?

  • I really don't think anyone would need convincing. Once anyone sees your baby shoveling in pasta or whatever they'll think it's awesome.

I think convincing family is a non-issue. You can tell them why you dercided to do it that way if they ask but it is your choice. Your DH on the other hand needs to be onboard. my DH was a bit skeptical at first. I let him read som stuff on lione about it and then we agreed we would give it a try and see how it went. He agreed to try it that way first and then evaluate if we thought it was working for DS and we were both comfortable with it.

We started with steamed brocolli and other steamed/soft fruits and veggie sticks. we started at 6 1/2 months and a couple of weeks later we put some oatmeal on a spoon and let him take it and put it in his mouth. So he was still feeding himself and not being "force fed" by us. I still do cereal like this. I hang on the tip of the spoon's handle to make sure it doesn't fly across the kitchen. :)

Oh and I usally used the arguments that 1 at 6 months babies often start fingerfoods and 2 ginving purees and then lumpy purees actually make it harder for them to learn to chew.

  • The only person you need to convince is your husband. No one else gets to make decisions for you and your family.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
