Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone consigned baby items?

I'm thinking of taking some things into Once Upon a Child but I'm not sure if it would be better to sell the stuff there or try to sell some of it on CL. If you consigned stuff did you get decent prices. If you've done so at OUAC what was your experience?

  • I have not done this yet myself, but I've heard that it's better to use what you're selling as "credit" for stuff you want to buy from them rather than trying to get cash.

They'll give you a better deal if you just want credit?

This. Also, be sure and call first.  The consignment store I go to was taking appointments to buy items for May '10 back in December '09.

  • i do a little of both.

my really nice items that i can pair with other things that are similar (like a few Ralph Lauren outfits in the same size, or a few GAP outfits in the same size/season, etc)... I will sell myself on ebay.

other things that i can't pair up to make a good lot of ebay, or things that aren't expensive brands I bring to a local consignment shop (actually, a few of them) and use what i make as credit to buy more stuff --- i love shopping consignment for the kids.

it takes a good amount of time to sell on ebay - so unless you are up for it- and are not good at doing it - i would just sell at consignment.

other stuff that isn't great quality i sell at a yard sale --- or donate.

I think so.  I read a post about it on EFF quite awhile ago and that's what I remember.

  • <-- I hate OUAC!!  I took a $40 bundle me and got $2.50 for it!  They are SUPPOSED to give you 40% of what they sell it for- they sell these for $15-- and mine wasn't stained or anything, you can tell it wasn't brand new, but in great condition!

I hate it that they give you like NOTHING for what you turn in but sell used things for pretty much retail price.  (the laugh and learn door was $50 and it was $60 in store on sale)  It might just be the ones in my area though- I think I would rather keep my clothes or give them away to someone who needs them than get $1 for a gymboree outfit.  BTW my OUAC is so over stocked they aren't even accepting baby clothes unless they are new with tags and the girl said even than, they aren't giving much for them.

SOME STORES-- I have been to 2- one store gives you a card that if you buy or sell $100 worth of stuff you get 20% your next purchse (one of those cards they stamp)--- and the other one if you turn stuff in and use the credit toward a purchase they give you 10% or 20% more store credit than if you just got cash back.

  • I've heard you don't get very much consigning there. I do the consignment sales where you set your own price but I also consign at a local store that I wait until it sells to get my check. CL is a good option as well.

Goldie, how do you find the sale to be at the stores? Would it be better to sell big stuff like the co-sleeper and bouncer on CL?

  • I love consigning.  I'm too lazy for CL.  I've just started consigning baby stuff, but with my stuff and MH's stuff, I think I probably make around $500 over the course of a year.

  • Thanks for all the input ladies. I appreciate it.

  • its a rip off. i will never sell to once upon a child again. they took a whole tote of cloths and gave me a 20 dollar credit... then i went back a couple days later and an outfit that was in the tote they had for sale for 13.

i plan on selling on CL

  • I also consigned at a little consignment store not OUAC-- I had a much better experience there-- I got $50 for one brown paper bag of clothes- but you have to wait until it sells to get the cash.  And I just ask the girl if I can have my clothes that don't sell back.  They also accept maternity there-
  • Sell at the spring consigment sales- you can do much better, plus you can shop the pre-sales!

  • we have a local store here that gives you 40% cash or 50% credit of what they sell it for. I haven't done it tho.

The other option is to sell at a mom2mom sale. You are the vendor so you decide what it sells for

here is an ontario link to some of them

    Ooh thank you!

  • Unless you have lots of time on your hands I'd do CL and sell the stuff in lots.
  • We use Kid to Kid, which is like OUAC ... you get 40% of the price (that they will sell it for). You get more if you choose credit than cashing out.

It's nice to have a store credit. I had $30 store credit, used it toward my double stroller and picked up it up for $60 instead of $90. Like that.

I haven't sold on CL, but I've sold some baby items at a garage sale and got ABOUT the same price (sometimes more, sometimes less). I will say that I would try OUAC first and whatever they don't take, that is what I would CL.

  • They really do take advantage of you, after all they're out to make money.  I try Craig's List first since there are no fees, you set the price, and you don't have to worry about packaging and shipping.  I then do eBay if nothing happens after a few weeks.  I prefer to do clothes as bundles (Craig's List large bundles, eBay small bundles).

Consignment stores are my last resort.

  • I participate in wee-cycle. Its a HUGE consignment sale that happens a couple times a year. I sold almost everything. Wee-cycle is just a MD thing but I know that other states have large sales like that. Mine was $5 to register you get 50/50 commission but if you refer friends or volunteer a shift at the sale you can earn up to 100% commission!

    https://www.wee-cyclemart.com/

I also buy used clothes, toys etc. I bought about $600 worth of clothes, baby gates and toys (some new!) for $75!!

EDIT: I sell big items ie: bouncers, seats on CL and clothes at consignment sales.
