Success after IF

need help getting fluids in

Henry has nursed several times today, but has thrown up after every feeding. The pedi told us to give him Pedialyte about an hour after every feeding, but I can't get him to take it. He doesn't take a bottle very often--once a week at the most, typically...he usually takes it fine, but I guess being sick he just doesn't want anything to do with it. I tried to give him a bottle of breastmilk this afternoon and he wasn't having it at all.

I gave him an ounce of Pedialyte earlier with a syringe, but I just can't get enough in him that way.

Any suggestions?

He's only had one wet diaper today and I'm so afraid we're going to end up in the hospital if I can't get some fluid in him.

  • try a tsp/dropper every 15 minutes. PITA, but that gets it into him.

  • I am so sorry that he is so sick.

I know that it is slow going, but if the syringe is what works, then keep at it.  It is also slow, but what about using a straw--putting a bit in, plugging the top with your finger then putting it in H's mouth.  I do this with water for Grant when we are eating out.  He always makes a face, but wants more.  Again, it is very slow going.  But, that may not be all bad, given how his tummy is feeling.

  • I don't have any input on the fluids, but just a thought about the bottles. The day I took my twins in and they were positive for RSV their ears were clear. Yesterday, three days later, I took them in for a recheck and M had an ear infection starting, W had a raging ear infection, both of them in both ears. I said something to the pedi about it being fast and she said ear infections are very common with RSV and they can come on in a matter of hours. That could explain the issue with the bottle.

My pediatrician told me the same thing, but I didn't think about it possibly interfering with the bottle.
