What do you pay for in-home?

What is the going rate for a private in (provider's) home care for a 6-8 week old infant? what about an older infant? What would you expect to pay a family member such as your sister :)?

Let's say 40 hrs per week?

We live outside a small-mid size city with a relatively low cost of living?

Note: It would be their LO and my LO only.

Re: What do you pay for in-home?

  • It varies widely based on your location.  For example, I live in the DC metro area and pay $250/week for in home.  Centers are out of my budget.  But my girlfriend who lives in Southern Maryland (about 2 hours from me) runs an in home daycare and can only charge $150/week for an infant; $125 for a toddler.  Huge difference within a two hour drive!  I would ask other moms in your area what they pay, or call around to daycares and ask.  It will probably get a more accurate ballpark figure for you.

  • I'm outside Philly and DD only goes to her sitter 2 days per week but we pay $50 per day. I paid $40 per day for the first sitter we used. When I was researching and interviewing I found that most were $150-$175 per week for FT.
  • I live outside Boston, MA and we pay $45 a day for DS1 and $36 a day for DS2 (20% sibling discount). That is VERY cheap for this area and also includes breakfast, lunch and two snacks. Before we had DS1 in a center and we were paying $205 a week for 3 days, so almost $70 a day. And that didnt include food, we had to pack breakfast, lunch, drinks, snacks, etc every day.
  • I teach in a small town 30 min from where we live. I only pay 20 dollars a day and only provide formula and baby food. Once she eats regular food DC will provide that. I cloth Diaper so I bring those too. She also has a 100 dollar max she will charge a week.

  • I pay my mom $90 a day which can be 10 hrs or so. Its more than what she would get subbing but less than anyone else out here.
  • Midwest $30 a day for 10 month old

  • We pay MIL $30 a day.  She's there for about 8-9 hours.  I provide all diapers, breastmilk, toys, etc.  DD is the only baby she watches.  I'm in IL.
  • I live in a pretty inexpensive area and pay $100/week, usually drop DD off at 7:45 and pick her up around 5pm.  It's my nextdoor neighbor, and she watches her own daughter and another little boy (6 months).  Most daycares in the area cost around 120-150/week... but like I said we live in an area with a low cost of living. I don't know how other mom's do it!
  • I'm in the Baltimore Area and In-home providers were running between $150-$230 a week for an infant. That price did not decrease until they are 2. Daycare centers were around $300-$350 a week.

Currently DD has a spot at a in-home provider, but DH was laid off, and most likely we are going have to give up that spot. If that happens then my aunt will be watching DD and I've asked to pay her, but she won't take our $$.

  • I'm in Columbus Ohio and we pay our in-home sitter $50/day or $170/week.  We use her as drop-in only so that's why it's so high per day.

  • My friend with a newborn pays $175 for an in-home care; and the hours are pretty flexible, between 8-10 hrs/day. She absolutely loves the flexibility of this informal daycare because the drop off and pick up times can move a little bit, and it's a flat rate.

  • I pay $150/week for FT DC, but that is the cheapst I've seen in my area (outside of Minneapolis).  Most people I know of pay closer to $200-225 for in-home.  I drop off around 7:45 AM and pick up around 5 PM.
