Banff? Tahoe?

Has anyone been to these places? I'm starting to plan our five-year anniversary trip for the fall and thinking about these two places as potential destinations. If you've been, pros? Cons? Other suggestions? We'd like to go somewhere where the weather is cool since we live in a very warm climate.

Re: Banff? Tahoe?

  • I haven't been to either, but I will be totally jealous if you go to Banff.  I have wanted to visit there for years. Tried to talk DH into for our honeymoon, but we went to Paris instead...which, of course, was fabulous, but he still owes me a trip to Banff.

FWIW...if you're looking to splurge, the Fairmont there is supposedly one of the best in the world.

  • i've been to Banff a few times--but never stayed overnight.  my mom lives in calgary so we do day trips.  it's soooo nice.  lots of shopping, cute town, good places to eat.  i would surely recommend.

  • Ive been to both. I would recommend Banff. It is so incredibly beautiful. We stayed at the Fairmont. What an amazing hotel! The mountains are different than the mountains in CO. They are beautiful in a different way. Banff is more of an International destination so I think there is more to do there and more to see than Tahoe. The town of Banff is so cute and there is shopping and great restaurants. Have fun!

  • I highly recommend Banff. Love spending time there, lots to do and beautiful scenery. Fairmont Banff Springs is great. I got to enjoy the spa, many years ago when my cousin worked there.
  • Banff. for sure. soooo pretty!  we're actually heading to Tahoe in a couple weeks to ski, but we've been there before. it's a very small rural town, with a tiny main street snazzy area. You would be bored silly in the fall. (we're bored there in the winter! lol)

  • Thanks ladies! I think I will start taking a look at Banff.
  • Banff is great, but touristy and expensive.  Jasper, Alberta is just as beautiful and not as crowded.  You could split your time between the two and have the best of both worlds.
  • I second splitting your time between banff and Jasper.  Banff is touristy and has great shopping, food, and spas.  Jasper is beatiful and has more waterfalls, short hikes and outdoorsy things - like the icefields.  Also if you get a chance a day trip out to Lake Louise or Morain Lake is a must.  The hotel at Lake Louise is gorgeous too -right on the lake.

We live in Calgary and visit all of these places at least once a year.

  • We've been to both as well and I'd definitely say Banff!  Tahoe is a ski town...not a ton to do outside of skiing in the winter.  We spent a week in Banff and still have things we want to go back and do!

There's a fabu b&b in Canmore - OMG! We LOVED it!

The owner used to be the exec chef at the Fairmont and now runs this with his wife.

DH actually booked this for us a surprise for our last night in the area.  He'd proposed that day on the Bow River under the shadow of Mt. Rundle.  We had dinner at the Fairmont and drove back to Canmore to stay here.

  • Wow, I never realized how many ladies are close to me until I read this post! Yay for Albertans!

Never been to Tahoe, but Banff is very pretty as well as touristy. My only complaint is that if you go shopping on a weekend it can get quite crowded. Like the other ladies said, Jasper is also very pretty as well.

  • Btw: we were there in early Sept - here are pics: https://bit.ly/4FM0Op

Also..Tahoe in the fall is really pretty if you're into hiking...although the weather can be iffy.  It's kind of an odd time between seasons.

  • I live 30 minutes from Tahoe and it is gorgeous! DH and I spent the first two nights up there after our wedding and even though we're "locals" we still had a ton of fun up there.
