Blood in spit up

H just spit up and it was RED. Not like a hint of it but clearly red. I have been diagnosed w/ thrush and the left nipple looks like it has gone through a meat grinder, so I'm assuming that it is my blood. What should I do? Not feed from that side? Should I even BE feeding him from the side w/ thrush? My doctor didn't say not to... Any help would be appreciated!

  • Eeek!  I think this warrants a call to both your Doctor and your Pediatrician.  Hope everything turns out ok.

  • I'd definitely call the pedi or your OB...I had thrush and my LC said I might see a streak of blood since my nipple was cracked, but I don't know about anything more than a streak.  As far as BFing from that side, I did and I was told it was fine (I had thrush on both breasts, though.) I'm sorry you're going through this...I remember how extremely painful thrush can be...and I hope you get some answers to the blood thing.  Is H acting normal?
  • i would call the pedi--but i would also do your own research....i believe i've read that it's ok for babies to nurse on the affected side, even if it is bleeding a bit.

i can't find the info i'm looking for now, ugh.

is H also being treated for thrush?  you both need treatment for it to be effective.

  • ditto pp's...I'm concerned about it being more than a hind of red..call pedi and your ob

How is H acting? I thought yesterday you thought he had a fever? Is he ok?

Good luck and keep us updated.

  • I still let him feed from the side with thrush and it was fine - although I never noticed any blood from him eating, just when I pumped (which is why I stopped pumping). Hope it's all ok and that you heal quickly! Thrush is the worst.

  • Thanks, everyone. I have calls in to both doctors. I pumped when I got out of the shower, and there was not even a hint of redness, which of course sent me into worry mode. BUT-he's got no fever, was acting happy and normal this morning, and is now down for his usual morning nap...so those make me feel better.

(And, no, he's not being treated for thrush. I was just put on the meds Wed afternoon, so I'll make sure to ask the ped to call in something for him. Good grief-this being a mommy thing is no joke!)
