DH Running 1/2 Marathon - IVF Timing

The IVF nurse at my new clinic just told me I will be on BCP for about 21 days, starting on CD3 of my next cycle, which I guesstimate will be on about Feb. 16thish.  That would put CD3 at maybe about March 15thish.

DH is running a 1/2 marathon on March 21st, which would potentially be about CD9ish of my IVF cycle.  The 1/2 marathon is local, but do you think this is a problem w/ possible ER/sample producing date falling around then?

He is going to be really unhappy if I tell him he has to bail out of this.  Also, he's training with good friends who know nothing about this and it would be hard to explain.

TTC in 2008. Stage II/III endo, Hashimotos hypothyroid, low morph (3%).

Re: DH Running 1/2 Marathon - IVF Timing

  • his running should have nothing to do with your cycle. The only thing he has to do is be there to drive you to/from your ER. Most halfs and full marathons are on Sundays. The clinic will intentionally try to schedule you for a midweek ER and only if your cycle varies (i.e. you need to stim longer or shorter) will there be a weekend overlap.

As far as his sample goes, his count shouldn't be affected by running.

  • I would just play it by ear.  It seems like it would be easier for DH to just "fall ill" the morning of the half marathon in the event that it was the day of your ER so, try not to worry and take it day by day.

FWIW, I think you will be ok.  Most women stim for at least 8 nights, then 36 hours later is your ER.  So, his sample may be due the day after the marathon but, it would still work out.

If I had a crystal ball I would SO let you know though!

  • I agree.  DH's running shouldn't bother it at all.  My DH is running a half THIS Sunday.  And usually they do schedule them for a Sunday --at least in my neck of the woods!

    Worry not!

  • I think you will be fine.

Running won't affect his sample at all and your ER will most likely not be CD 9.

  • My DH is marathon obsessed, and we had asked the RE about this (quality of his sperm affecting our IVF), and the doctor said it wasn't a big concern. Example: If DH is donating his sample today, the sperms that are in there was most likely produced 3 weeks ago. So, it wont affect what's coming out today. Make sense?

  • It really seems like the running wouldn't be a concern... but if you are worried, your DH can always go in and produce a sample earlier to be frozen.    my DH didn't want to produce the day-of with me in surgery, so we used a frozen sample for our IVF, and clearly it had no impact on our chance of success.     just another option!

  • I would double check with your RE.  My RE said he didn't want either of us doing strenuous training leading up the cycle, such as marathon training.  A half may be different, but I would at least ask.
  • I have a different opinion that all the other posters.

Considering you have MFI and most importantly morphology issues I would try to avoid a marathon days before IVF. The tight clothing and the heat generated in the scrotum area is not good for the sperms.

We have severe MFI problems too. And DH tried to avoid tight fitting clothes, hot baths, escp exercising(running) during cycle etc.He even switched to boxers and jeans to khakis to keep things airy/cool. Now,inspite of this it took us more than one cycle to get there. But I truly believe little things like these do matter!! why take the risk?
