Pumped milk & flying internationally

I am en route from Vancouver to Denver. Going through security in Canada with my breast milk was a bit of a nightmare. It was much easier here in Phoenix (I had to change airlines).

If you have to do it, make sure, in advance, that you only have 100 ml of milk in each bag. I had to unpack all my milk in security and transfer it into other bags so each was only 100 ml. It was very frustrating and annoying.

The other annoying thing was that I had to explain several times that my baby wasn't with me, which was why I had the pumped milk.

I have to confess, I did cry a little. It's been a long, rough trip. In case you missed it the airline lost my baggage and my pump broke. I hardly got any work done between client meetings because I was running around trying to find a new pump and buying a few necessities.

  • Wow!  Sounds like you had quite the ordeal.  You had every right to cry...I would have too.  Glad it all worked out in the end.

  • I am so sorry.  What a terrible trip.

I didn't have any issues the one time I traveled internationally with BM, but it sounds like it's hit and miss.  :(

I am sure you are glad to be home!

  • Wow, that sounds awful.  You are supermom though!!
  • in Canada they made you have it in 100ml bags or in the US?

That's crazy!  I fly every week and when I tell them I have BM, they never bat and eye and it goes thru without a hitch.  I flew home from Orlando on Wed night with over 100 ounces and again, not a hitch!

I admit, I too cried..... once I got thru security I needed to pump and there was not a single family restroom or a stall that had a plug.  Every other airport has a family restroom which is perfect.  I had to find a corner and use my hooter hider and pump out in public.  I was FUMING!  I did have a battery pack, but needed to save the battery for on the plane since it's an almost 6 hour flight home.

    ahh, the things we do!
