Infertility

Is having thin lining an IF problem?

I had an U/S yesterday to check for any abnormalities because I have very light periods and lots of spotting.  Everything came back normal but she said my lining was 5mm, which was less than she'd like to see it.  I found on google that an ideal lining is 11mm, which is quite a difference from what I have.

I'm just starting out getting tests done for IF, next week is more bloodwork and a SA for DH.  I was just wondering how much of a problem having a thin lining is?  Is this a big contributer to us having TTC issues?  Also, do you know what they can do to thicken it?

Re: Is having thin lining an IF problem?

  • It's something that can be very easily corrected with progesterone supp. if lining continues to be a problem. Usually it's not a huge contributing factor to IF, but it sure doesn't help. Good luck with your upcoming tests, hope everything goes well!

  • Do you know how many days past ovulation your lining was measured?  It's important that it is post-ovulation, as that's when it will be the thickest.  If you're with an RE, I'm sure they probably did it right.  OB's don't always test things at the appropriate time.  How long is your luteal phase?  If it's at least 11 days, you should be fine.

My RE always attributed my thin linings to having poorly developed eggs in that cycle.  Some cycles I had a good lining, some not so good.  It's related to how much estrogen is being produced by the follicle.  My RE liked to see it at least 8mm, 9mm is even better.

    Good luck with your testing!

My OB was the one who scheduled me for an U/S, it was to check for a few different things.  But it was done at CD13.  No sign of O as of yet.  So you're right about the OB's not always testing at the right times.  My LP's are always 15-16 days long, so I don't have any trouble there.  I just spot the entire time, which is terribly annoying!  It's nice to hear that your RE wanted yours at 8mm or 9mm.  That also helps me to know where I factor in.  Thanks for your help!

  • I have been trying for a year, and after all the routine testing, the only thing my RE can find is that I have a thin lining.  In my 4 monitored cycles so far, it's been 4, 5.4, 7.06 and 4.8.  That has been at ovulation.  I basically have no chance for a fertilized egg to implant because there is not a thick enough lining.  My RE has tried vivelle dot patches (which is estrogen) to help thicken it, but it doesn't seem to be working.  I go for my midmonth sono tomorrow and if I don't see an improvement this month, we are moving on to injectable meds.  If you have any questions, let me know...I don't come across too many people who are dealing with a thin lining as their main issue so I'll help as much as I can!

  • If you hadn't O'd yet, that's probably why yours was thin.  My lining never got above 7-8 until I had at least a 15mm follicle.

If you're really anxious to get to the bottom of your TTTC, I wouldn't spend too much time with an OB.  RE's are soooo much better at helping you get pg!

Wow, sounds like we have similar problems!  Was your Ovulation consistent each month?  Mine is all over the board.  But I usually O, so I don't think PCOS is an issue.  Did they try Progesterone sup's with you?  I look forward to following your story.  GL to you!!

    Hi Friend!!  You found me!

  • I just went in for a visit with the vag cam today b/c of pelvic pain.  At 6DPO my lining was only 5.  She told me progesterone is a slow process of THINNING lining and it's the estrogen in your system btw AF and O that thickens it up.  I have some estrace that I'm going to take before O next cycle to try to thicken it up (last time I had a cyst it was 4 at about the same point.)

My ovulation was very consistent, within 2-3 days each month.  I do take endometrin (progesterone suppositories) which have lengthen my luteal phase from 6-7 days to 10-11 days.  I've still had issues with spotting (last month I spotted for over 2 weeks and my cycle was only 19 days) and my lining hasn't gotten any better.

I'll let you know tomorrow how I fared this month and what our plan is!  Good luck to you.
