So today I am 28 Weeks! Since we found out we were having twins there has a been a discrestion in the girls weights... They have been monitoring me for this and I have even been put on Bed Rest for it, to try to increaase the calories, even though there is no proof that it works.
So today we saw the Peri doctor for our Ultrasound the lil one is weighing 1pd 14oz, the bigger one is weighing 2pds 11oz, they both did gain weight and the lil one is above the 10th percentile, but theres still some concern. So now I see them twice a week for a non stress test and ultrasound... So then we go to my OB and shes like well as you know theres some concern with the weight and over the next few weeks we are going to really need to watch this because I feel your going to be having them sooner than we expect. GREAT! So then Im like so umm how soon are we talking and shes like well not next week, but thats as far as I can guess! So then she sent me for a steroid shot, to help with the lung development so when they are born there wont be such a concern with that, and will help when they are in the NICU.
Has anyone else had this happen to them or no anyone with the same problem. I am just so frustrated and concerned that they will be born too early.
Re: So Frustrated!!!
My babies were born at 31 weeks. As we knew they would be premature I did a ton of research on this.
28 weeks is considered to be the "magic" number. NICU doctors love babies born after the 28 week mark. Getting the steroid shot is good as well, however I do not understand getting it if they are not positive labor is immanent, within the next week.
My babies spent 25, 26 and 28 days in the hospital. They did very well..
hang in there mama! don't have any info on the weight issue specifically.
it is good you got the steroid shots. as i remember they gain effectiveness. so that if you have the babies in 2 weeks the steroid shots will have maximum effect (something along those lines). i had 2 courses of the steroids... at 23 and 28wks.
28wks is a big milestone... so not that you want them to come early, but for long term it is good to get past that point... as long as they're better off in your tummy. good luck!
Are they ID twins?
I had ID twins, I had the same concerns with my baby B. She was below the 10th percentile. I also had doppler flow test 2 times a week,, which showed interment absent. My baby B wasn't getting what she needed. I went on hospital bedrest at 27 weeks. They wanted to monitor her 2 times a day on the NST and to keep a constant eye on her.
I had a round of steroids at 27 weeks and then again at 34 weeks. I delivered at 34 weeks 1 day! I was in the hospital the duration. She weighed 2lbs 14oz and my baby A weighe 4lbs 5oz.
It's scary, but hospital bedrest helped me keep my girls in longer and one spent a week in NICU and baby B spent a total of 2 1/2 weeks.
Let me know if you have any more questions!

All but one of my ultrasounds showed my girls to be within ounces of each other. As it turns out the only one that showed a weight difference of a little over a pound was right around 28 weeks. I delivered at 37 weeks 3 days, Baby A was 6lbs3 oz and baby B was 4lbs11oz. Both girls came home with me at 5lb12 oz and 4lbs 6 oz. I also had a steroid injection at 30 weeks due to increasing contractions. I am very glad we didn't know about the weight difference, staying in me proved to be better then being out early.
At my 34 wk growth u/s, they said that A was SGA--7th %-ile-- (small for gestational age) and was measuring about 1.5 lbs behind her sister. Dr. said to be prepared to deliver around 36 wks when they would redo a growth scan. At 36 wks, she managed to put on 7 oz (which was the minimum my peri would allow for her to stay inside) and so they started doing twice weekly BPPs to check on her. At that pt. they labeled her IUGR.
When I delivered at 38w5d, she was only 2.5 oz. smaller than her sister---so the measurements ended up being waaay off and luckily both girls were of adequate weight/no NICU time!!
When the discrepancy was first detected at 34 wks, dr. started me on 2-3 xs a day with liquid protein shakes (ensure, boost, etc.). He said there was enough research out there to suggest that the liquid protein sources cross the placentas easier/faster and would hopefully help A have more growth!!
GL!!
They are not ID twins as far as we know. They share the same placenta, but there is a dividing membrane, they said its tedious task to measure the dividing membrane so there is still a chance that they could be ID twins. I havent had the best of luck with our Peri doctors they are all over the place, and I think that also hasnt helped much.
I am thinking I am going to start drinking the boost or ensure supplements to see if that might help with growth of the smaller one.
I am really just hoping that we can hold off and keep them in there for as long as possible, another thing is, is that my mother was so stubborn when it came to deciding on my shower date that my shower isn't until the last weekend in February, but Im not going to stress myself about that, if I have them before the shower we will manage but I really would like things to just go as planned!
Like PP said, 99% are ID. I had my girls in the same sac, membrane between them and sharing a placenta. that was the problem one was getting more than the other.
I would think your peri's need to figure that out because TTTS is a scary thing.
Good luck and I have been in the same situation let me know if you have questions!

I have been reading about TTTS, and next week when I go I am going to ask about that. They looked at the sacs and the fluid levels in both were good, and they did the doppler thing over the placenta and that was fine, so basically they are just thinking she is just smaller. We are going to be having a non stress test and more doppler studies on Monday so hopefully that can give us more answers as well, and we will be doing that every week until they decide to deliver me, which I really hope is longer than they are expecting.
At how many weeks did you deliver your twins?
