Ask for a promotion AND going part-time?

I have my yearly review with my manager today and I have a couple issues I want to discuss with her.

1) A promotion that should have happened but didn't but only because it was never brought up before.

2) Wanting to go part-time to 28 hour weeks.

So how do i do this?  Do i not ask for a promotion and go part time or do I ask for both? What would you do?

Another thing which shouldn't matter by law is that I am in my first trimester of my third pregnancy.  6.5 weeks.  but I don't plan on discussing this with her yet.

WHAT SHOULD I DO????

  • Ooh thanks for posting this.  I'm going through the same thing, so I'll be interested in responses.  I can tell you this though.  When pitching your part-time proposal, make it about them vs. your benefit.  Point out how the work will still get done even though you switch to pt, and also highlight your strengths.

  • In this economy, I'd pick one.  Not both.

You're asking for more money, more esteemed position, & fewer hours, correct?  We'd be holding hands & ice skating in hell before my company agreed to that.

I'd have to largely ditto this.  What kind of promotion are you talking about?

I've seen many people get 'demoted' when they went part time.  But it was from a managerial position.  The company simply couldn't have PT managers.  That's why I wonder what kind of promotion  you're talking about.

    Ditto 100%.

Seriously - why on earth would any employer agree to that?  Why would anyone agree to pay you more to have you work less?  Take yourself out of this and think about it........it's a pretty ridiculous request.

  • Ditto pp -- I think you need to choose right now.  Not saying you can't go after one or the other later but I certainly would NOT bring them up in the same breath.  Honestly, if I were your boss and you did that, I'd tell you to pick one or the other.  So divide and conquer -- you need to choose which of the two is the most important to you:  the promotion or the PT.  Then go in and ask for it and make your case.  Work for a few more months.  Then approach your boss about the other item with the expectation that the 2nd request might be denied and what other concessions you might want (maybe a 32 hr week or flexibility to work from home or flex your hours more for the PT thing, a pay raise or different title instead of your desired promotion, etc.).

  • They wouldn't be paying me more, my salary would be pro-rated by the % of how many hours I work.

The promotion is because my position has changed to include more responsibility and by going part-time it wouldn't change that. I'd still have higher responsibility I am just doing it under 40 hours.

This is why I am having a hard time deciding.  I'm not sure if I should be cut of a promotion just because I choose to go part-time.

  • I wish life worked out better for moms and dads who wanted to work part-time and still advance in their careers.

I went part-time after my first DD was born and was passed over for promotion.  I still did 100% of the work but at 80% of the pay.  I bust my hump at work and do great work that my manager has taken credit for more than once but I keep getting passed over.  I think the impression is that because I am part-time I am less committed to the job/company.  It's hard to convince otherwise at this point so I am just enjoying my 4 day work weeks and doing my best work but not taking it home with me as I used to.

You can ask for both and maybe you will get both, but in this day and age, I would be happy with one.

So in essence, you'd be telling your boss that your job is so simple that you don't really need to work 40 hours/week to do it?

Because that's exactly how it comes off.  You can do the same level of work that you're doing now with fewer hours.  Either you need more job duties, or you need to have your hours cut accordingly.  Either way, I don't see how you can argue for a promotion......you're basically telling them that you don't have enough to do, regardless of how much responsibility it entails.

  • If one of my employees came to me with that I could never take her seriously again.
  • So go in, make your case for the promotion, get it and stay quiet for a while.  FF 3 months and approach your boss about cutting your hours.

  • I asked for part-time, was given it and was also offered a promotion at the same time. So it can definitely work. My manager wanted to move me into a leadership position. This position has more responsibility in that I am managing and leading a global team. But, there is no problem with doing that at 80%.

This makes sense for me.  It sounds like it really depends on what kind of promotion it is, and what it would mean to have that title working at pt.  Sounds like in your environment, it would work fine.

I say go ahead and ask for both:  promotion first, then PT--all in the same meeting.
