Babies: 3 - 6 Months

DD not taking to solids

Today was day 9 of solids, and she's completely not interested in any of it..  we've tried squash, sweet potatoes, and oatmeal- she blows raspberries and spits it all out. There's lots of gagging, and bad face making..

we try twice a day, in the AM after her bottle, and 2pm ish- we try to make it a positive fun experience, but in the end she's frustrated..

How long did it take your LO to get accustomed to "eating"?

Re: DD not taking to solids

  • Do u bf? If so my pedi said that it may take them longer to accept solids. They are used to pushing with their tongue to take in food so they try to do the same with solids which pushes it right back out. Lily is doing much better now than 2 weeks ago. She eats about a 3rd of the jar at a time. (The little stage 1 jars) HTH

  • If she's not interested in it, why not wait a couple of weeks?   Olivia took a while before she cared much for solids - she was maybe 8ish of so months before she started eating any sort of substantial amount (more then a teaspoon or two), before that it was just practice.  I haven't even started with Natalie, yet.    If you are wondering, Olivia became an excellent eater and not picky at all, so don't worry too much about it if your LO isn't interested yet:)  GL!

  • It didn't take DS long at all. The second time we tried he was eating it up. But whenever we introduce a new flavor he makes a face and can't figure it out. Then he gets used to it and likes it. He prefers some flavors more than others. Have you tried feeding her the solids before the milk? That's what we do usually. If your LO is already full from the milk she might not be interested in the food. Try it the other way around and see. Or just be persistent, some babies just need to get used to the texture and flavor of food. Maybe try oatmeal cereal instead or rice, she might like it better. Also, blowing raspberries might not mean she doesn't like it, that might be her way of exploring the new food. I read about that in a book. GL!

  • Do eat with her?  It should be social more than nutritive at this point.  It also takes something like 20 tastes before you can truly say they don't like the taste.
