Infertility

I was told you girls may be able to help me....

Today I found out that DH sperm count is 0. that is right......zero. I just found out my husband is sterile. I have never felt this terrible in my life. I may never be able to hold a baby that is my husbands own flesh and blood. Please someone tell me it gets better.

Re: I was told you girls may be able to help me....

  • I'm sorry about the news. We are dealing with MFI but not a count of 0 so I can't really offer any advice. I know there are women here that can, though.

  • Let me first say I am so very sorry. There is a MFI group on here and some are dealing with azoospermia. If you don't hear from any of them...there was a check in yesterday so maybe go back and take a look at the post.

I know that there are amazing things being done in the fertility world that offer hope.

  • I am so sorry about your dx.  We are not dealing with MFI, however, there are several women on here that are and I think there is even a check in specifically for it that you could participate in.  Hopefully some of those ladies are on right now and will get in contact with you.  This board is full of wonderful amazing ladies and even though we are all dealing with different types of IF, we are all here for support.  Hopefully your stay here will be short.

  • Trust me, it gets better.  We're dealing with MFI as well (male factor infertility) and there are some treatment options.  In your case, I'm not sure if zero really means absolutely none, or if it means too small to count in a regular SA, but there are SOME in there.  If he does have even a tiny amount of sperm, perhaps IVF is an option.  If not, perhaps his condition can be treated, or perhaps you will consider donor sperm or adoption.  You're in shock right now, and it will take some time to adjust to this news.  But, life goes on.  If you still want to be a parent you WILL be able to make that happen.  It just might not be the way you always thought it would happen, and it may take some time and hard work.  But, IT GETS BETTER!

  • I am so sorry. Our problems are on my side, so I can't relate to the MFI, but please know that you are not alone. We are all struggling with IF here and everyone is super supportive.

I don't know how recent your diagnosis, or how much research you've done, but I saw a special on MFI, and they did something called TESE. I'm not sure the cause of your husband's zero sperm count, but this did offer some hope for those who in the past would not have been able to have biological children. I hope that information helps.

  • I'm so sorry about your news. We are not dealing with MFI, but I wanted to tell you that you came to the right place to be supported. Best of luck to you, it sounds like you will have a long journey ahead. I hope that everything works out in the end.
  • Oh, and just in case you haven't already, make an appointment with a good reproductive endocrinologist and also with a good urologist.  Some are not good, so make sure you talk with your physician to get a referral and do your homework on the practice.  These specialists can start to provide some answers.  You will feel better with more info and a plan.
  • DH and I recently got the same news and the initial shock really hit me hard.  But I'm not giving up just yet.  We're meeting with a Urologist that specializes in MFI.  I'm hoping that mTESE may work.  If they can't find any sperm after that, then we'll be done.  But until then, I keep dreaming of us have a biological baby.

Don't give up until you have exhausted all options.  You never know what can happen.  This board has been extremely helpful to me.  Not only for information but also for inspiration.

Good luck to you and your DH.

  • We are dealing with MFI too. It's very hard to take in. Find a good RE and urologist and talk with them. There are many new treatments for MFI. I'm so sorry you have to go through this too.

  • I am so sorry. My DH was also diagnosed with Azoospermia and at first it seemed like we couldn't have been told anything worse...well, sometimes it still seems that way, but after the initial shock and once you start looking at possible options, it does get a little better.

Do they have any idea why his count may be 0 and if they think you could find sperm through TESE? Do they think there may be an obstructive?  In cases with an obstruction they can often remove it which will allow the sperm to come through. Even when there is no obstruction, which is our case, there is hope that sperm is there and can be extracted through TESE. We will be trying to do that in March and also are having donor sperm as a backup, which is another option (I know the idea of that is a LOT to think about this early on).

There is also an Azoospermia check-in on this board (Thursdays?) where you will see tons of women who have dealt with this same thing and many encouraging success stories. Please stick around, we're all here for you and this board is full of amazing women, I don't know what I would have done if I had not found it!

  • ((hugs))

Sorry you got this news.  There are several ladies on here whose DH's have azoospermia (no sperm).  However, not all is lost; they can do a procedure called TESE where they look inside your DH's testes to see if there are any sperm hanging out & extract them.  I believe there was someone on here who got 4 (yes, 4) that way & ended up pregnant.  GL!

  • Your prognosis will depend on why your DH's count is 0.

First thing to do - find a urologist that specializes in male infertility.  Most likely, they'll run another SA along with some blood work.

My DH's azoospermia (the term for 0 sperm in the ejaculate) is caused by CBAVD - congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens.  In english - his vas deferens (the tube that carries sperm out of the testes) never developed.  It's a complication of his having cystic fibrosis.  It also happens to a number of males that are only carriers of the CF gene, or have undiagnosed mild CF.  This cause of azoo has excellent results in getting sperm extracted from the testes for use in IVF/ICSI.

There are other causes - but since they aren't our problem, I'm not very familiar.

But yes, with this DX, there is still a chance you will be able to have biological children.  It all depends on the cause, and most likely, you will need IVF.  Best course of action is to get in to see a urologist who specializes in male IF and for you to start looking for a fertility doc (RE).

I'm sorry you didn't get better news.  There's a check-in on Thursday (usually posted late in the day) for people dealing with azoo.

Husband has cystic fibrosis. I'm a carrier. We did TESE, IVF, ICSI, and PGD. After two failed IVFs, we were blessed with our twins.

We've had three different 0 SA, I know how devastating they are and I am so sorry that you are dealing with this. Make an appointment ASAP with a urologist that specializes in male infertility, do not bother wasting time seeing a regular urologist, we did that and are paying for it now. Make sure you have another SA and yet another one after the second one. Demand answers and testing, all kinds of testing. If the repeat SAs are also 0, get blood tests to check hormone levels, to check for genetic abnormalities and thyroid level. Have the uro check for a blockage in your H's testicles, a varicocele is what it's called.

I put my H on Fertility Blend vitamins that I bought at GNC for $40, I have no clue if they work or not but we did find 4 sperm in our fourth SA. I made him stop smoking, drinking (not that he was a big drinker) and taking hot showers. I was desperate to try anything that might help.

My most important piece of advice is to be aggressive in getting answers and to not give up. Sadly, there are a good number of us dealing with azoospermia, please join our weekly check-in on Thursdays. Page us if you need to vent, scream or ask questions.

  • Welcome, and I am truly sorry you're going through this.  Our problems are all me, but I can relate to the feeling of devastation and hopelessness that sets in when you find out that there is a big problem.  There are many amazing treatment options out there.  Most importantly, don't give up hope.
  • I'm sorry to hear about your husband's test results. We found out a little over a year ago that DH has azoospermia as well. We knew it was always a possibility due to chemo, but it still was very upsetting and surprising. It's a lot to deal with. After the 2nd SA, we knew that was the end of the road for us as far as having a child genetically linked to both of us. For us the reason for his infertility is clear, so we have no pursued any additional testing for him.

I'll be honest. It gets better and it gets worse, some days it's easier than others to deal with the reality. But generally, overall, it has gotten much better.

Like many of the other posters have mentioned, get additional testing done. There may still be hope for you to have a genetic child.

One thing that was really helpful for me, besides these boards, was going to my local RESOLVE group meetings. It's for individuals/couples dealing with infertility.

This may not be your main concern now, but something that helped me not feel so close to rock bottom is the fact that someday I WILL raise a child with my husband. We don't know how that child will come into our lives, but we're going to be kick @ss parents and get to experience parenthood together.

     Good luck.

  • I saw your post on GP and then found you over here.  We are dealing with MFI but not at 0.  We have less than 2% normal morph which is a pretty major issue as well.  We meet with our reproductive urologist this afternoon so I'll report back in after and let you know what I find out.  Maybe there will be some information you can get that will help you on your journey.

Take a few days and just let the news sink in.  Your husband is going through a lot right now too.  Mine doesn't talk about it much but I know his feeling of adequacy is really low.  We have options.  Expensive options, but we have options.  You do as well.  Are they what you would have originally chosen? Of course not, but you can and will be a mother.  Maybe not biologically linked to your husband and you two will have to come to terms with that if that's what you decide, but your hopes and dreams of being parents aren't gone, they've just been altered a bit.

*hugs*  Hang in there!! We're all here to support!

  • Unfortunately, I know EXACTLY how you feel. DH was first told that his SA was a 0 sperm count right after Christmas. He had a 2nd one that said the same thing. It was shocking so I know exactly how you are feeling. Right now we are waiting to meet with the urologist in Feb. to see what the next step is.

I can't offer much advice, only that you are not alone and that this board has been so helpful.  Is DH going to meet with a urologist?
