Q about CD3 u/s (IUI people please help!)

My right ovary has 8 follies and the left has 4 follies.  What is the average or normal amount of follies that you usually "see" on CD3?  Does anyone know?

It's been a long journey. TTC since 9/06. multiple IUI's and IVF's and 4 m/c's. IVF#3 = BFP, twins, induced at 34w6d due to baby b passing away (no explanation). Delivered on 35w1d, Baby A - baby girl, and Baby B - baby boy, our little angel.

  • I'm not sure about averages, but I think I always had fewer than that.  At this point, they are not mature so I wouldn't worry too much about the number.  Wait a week or so for u/s monitoring to tell you how many are mature (i.e. 16-20mm and likely to be released).  GL!

  • I don't know what an average number is. To be honest I don't really pay attention to the number of follicles. It's the CD12 u/s that I really pay attention to since that will tell you how many are mature or close to maturity.

    Ditto. When I had mine, I think I had about 11 total...btu it varies from woman-to-woman & cycle-to-cycle.

  • At my first CD3 I had 16 on one side and 18 on the other.  None of them ever matured on the Clomid, though!  As others said, it's the # that mature later on that matters.

  • Like pp said, it varies for everyone. I had my cycle day3 u/s this morning (technically I'm cycle day2). And I ha a few on each side. Maybe 7-8 total. I'm hoping to have 3-4 mature follies by trigger.

  • I've never asked about the number at CD3.  I am always more concerned with whether or not there's a cyst.  Sounds like good odds to make a few mature ones in a bit over a week, though! Good luck!

  • I just talked to my RE about this.  The CD3 ultrasound helps give them an idea of ovarian reserve.  They look at both ovarian volume/size and the number of antral follicles.  I believe they like to see combined count for both ovaries >11.  The number of antral follicles goes down with age.  And in studies correlates with IVF success rates.
