Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Need advice...do you use a sleep positioner? (4.5 month old)

Ellie is 4.5 months and can flip herself over from her back to tummy and tummy to back, but when she's in her crib, she flips from her back to tummy and then freaks out because it's like she can't remember how to flip back over! She has been STTN, but last night she was up at 9 and again at 2:30 because she couldn't get back over and I ended up feeding her because she was just so upset. I haven't done that in the middle of the night in almost a month and afraid we're going to start a new habit!

The RN at our ped said not to use sleep positioners, but I feel like it might have been a CYA because of SIDS. She has great head control, so I'm really not worried about her suffocating, but wanted to get others opinions or other ideas if this has happened to you.

 TIA!

  • My LO has done the same thing a few times. I do not use a sleep positioner and don't plan on getting one. I just flip her back over and go back to bed.

I don't make a fuss over her at this time because I don't want her to need a lot to get back to sleep in the middle of the night.

  • We use a sleep positioner and have since birth b/c DD liked the close comfort but not being swaddled.  Our sleep positioner is Sassy from Target and is really a piece of fabric with two adjustable triangular pieces on the sides.  IMO, it works well and has helped us get some sleep (until the four month wakeful and teething).
  • All 3 of my kids outgrew the BRU sleep positioners by 2 months.  I would just flip her over, or calm her down (ie patting her, picking her up), and not feed her.  It'll just be a phase;  she'll be out of it soon.

this. my LO used to get stuck a lot when he would flip himself. that happened for about 3 or 4 weeks. now, he is content to stay sleeping on his tummy. hopefully your LO will get used to it too and stop waking up!
