I've heard that you should just increase the time between pumps more and more - so if you pump every 3 hours, increase it to every 3.5, then ever 4 hours, then every 4.5 or 5 hours, etc. until you reach 2x a day, then just stop.
If you're going to make the switch, do it slowly...introduce formula slowly over a week or two. I think there are guidelines on the American Association of Pediatrics site or something...we started with a couple bottles a day, then upped it slowly over several days until she was on it 100%. I think it helps with the pain of stopping BF too. You'll still be in pain for 3 days or so, but it gets better.
