Babies: 3 - 6 Months

From Miracle Blanket to...?

We have been swaddling since birth and using the Miracle Blanket since about 3 weeks since that's when LO started busting out of a regular swaddle.  He learned how to break out of the Miracle Blanket about 2 months ago but for the most part he slept in it.  Now he is busting out of it super easily and we have to re-wrap him every time he wakes up (which lately can be up to five times a night.)  It's getting REALLY annoying.

We tried to wean him off of it (by taking out one arm) and that was a disaster.  He woke up even more frequently at night and would sleep around an hour for his naps when swaddled he can sleep up to 2.5 hours.

I also tried sewing the arms of a sleep sack closed and putting him in that at night.  No go.  He woke up every 1.5 hours.  And kept bringing his hands up to his face and hitting himself.  (Through the sleep sack.)

I'm worried that sleeping in the Miracle Blanket so much is stunting his development since he is not even interested in rolling over yet.

Long story short: Those of you who have weaned your kid from the Miracle Blanket - what did you go to?  I'm thinking about something like the Woombie but I really have no idea.  Please help.

Re: From Miracle Blanket to...?

  • The only reason I don't buy the Miracle Blanket stunting development (or swaddles for that matter) is because I personally know plenty of babies who are still swaddled at 6, 7 months. Good? No. But their development is fine. I think the more important thing to remember is every baby is different and he'll roll when he's ready.

That said, I did try to peke moe because I was having the exact same problems you are with my dd. She does not even attempt to bring her hands through the neck to her face (as she did with EVERY other swaddle and attempt we tried). I can't say your lo would or wouldn't, but mine does not.

It has worked for us so that's just my $.02.

  • Same dilemma- except we were using the Swadle Me.  I am looking into a Peke Moe.
  • The Escape Proof Swaddle.

We never used a miracle blanket, but I'm told this is similar, plus it uses regular blankets so no need to buy more. We love this swaddle, and have had great success with it! Hope it works as well for you.

  • we just went cold turkey- she got used to it after a night or so.

As far as development- we thought the same thing and that was our motivation to stop swaddling. For what its worth it seems like she has made major progress on milestones since we stopped swaddling. It could just be random, but I think it made a difference.

  • cold turkey also.   we do put her in a carter's sleep sack over her pjs now, but her arms are free.

the MB doesn't stunt development. Max was swaddled at night til about 9 months and for naps til 10 months. He rolled over, crawled, Pulled up to standing, cruised etc all on time or early. Some babies just need to be swaddled longer. My pedi said her kids needed it til 12 months

  • We still swaddle for the most part, I just moved up to a bigger swaddler because he outgrew the Miracle Blanket. I don't think it affects development, DS has been rolling over for awhile now.?
  • were having the same problem exactly. I bought a woombie but DS is  obsessed with the fact that he can get his hands to his face and suck on the fabric. So needless to say he doesnt want to sleep b/c its soooo much fun Confused

I have no suggestions just wanted to let you know ur not alone LOL
