I have Kate at a daycare I like but don't love. She doesn't sleep there. The baby room is a bit disorganized...and there are 6 month olds to 18 month olds in there as they haven;t moved them up yet. However, they love her and she seems fine.
My school has a pre-school that starts at 18 months. I was there today for Day of Service and it was an amazing place. The teachers are great (and actual teachers, with EC degrees), the rooms have tons of stuff, they have a curriculum that includes a lot of play and learning. I want her there desperately.
The tuition is $12K. September-June. I am a teacher. I don't make that much. We could probably swing it, but just barely. But after being there today, I became convinced that I need to get her there next year. I was talking to the director and she was mentioning that we had a compensation committee meeting now to see if there could be tuition assistance for the program (ours doesn't start unil Pre-K right now). Fingers crossed!
Do you think this is worth it to try and get her there (it's about 3k more than we're paying right now, and she's in a 12-month program)?
Re: I need to make this work!
That sounds like an amazing program.
I would try to get her in and keep my fingers crossed that the tuition assistance program goes through. Then once she is admitted you can decide if you can make the switch or not. Also, are you also off the same time she is off? If not, then you would have to find alternative childcare so you need to consider that expense.
Yeah...the problem is they require a $750 non-refundable deposit in March. I'm hoping they'll waive it for teachers...while the committee is still deciding. And we're off at the same times, except on staff/faculty days, but we have parents nearby who love to take care of her.
Wow, that is a pretty big non-refundable fee. When is the deadline?
This is a tough call. I wish you the best of luck. I personally consider school a long term investment. The way I see it is that if I send my kids to a good pre-school, and grade school. Then they will get into a great HS and college, with scholarships hopefully.
Tuition in Chicago is pretty expensive too. A top school charges $23K for preschool, it drops down to $17k for grade school since the teacher to student ratio increases. But with 3 kids, that definitely out of our budget.
