Babies: 3 - 6 Months

If your LO has reflux..

can you tell me exactly how it effects them? I'd like to see a comparison for L so I can understand if some of her things are typical or not. I have done plenty of reading and I am thinking that something more might be going on with her.

Here's what she does

-Has to have her bottles thickened with 2Tbls of cereal or else she aspirates. Even with a station 1 nipple, she'll choke on her bottles if they aren't all but sludge.

-Refluxes often but doesn't necessarily spit it out. A lot of times she'll shutter, shake and swallow it, then cry. She does this a LOT. Upwards of 40+ times a day sometimes.

-She'll no longer lay down for a bottle, she fuss till you sit her up and that is no easy task.

- She gets the hiccups anywhere from 4-8 times a day but they don't usually last longer then 10 minutes.

-When her reflux gets really bad, she stops vocalizing. It's typically just for a day (sometimes 2) but she's gone as long as 4 days with very minimal, to almost no vocalizing.

Can anyone let me know if their LO does all these same things? It's only getting worse and worse but they cannot give her anymore Prevacid then she already takes (30mg, broken in half and given twice a day).

Also, we see the GI Dr. on Wednesday, anything specifically I should know or expect?

Re: If your LO has reflux..

  • huh.  Interesting.

Harrison is a "classic" reflux kid.

-spit up even an hour after the bottle was done

    - lunge for the bottle, suck hard, then push it away screaming.  then grab for the bottle again, suck hard, push away screaming.

    - scream after bottle was done.

    - well, just scream.  for hours.  and hours.  and hours.  inconsolably.  NOTHING soothed him.

    -hiccups all the damn time.

    -coughing

    - congested sounding all the time, plus a very hoarse cry & coo

-you could hear him choking on fluid & gulping it at the same time, no matter the nipple flow (so that's like L)

    - arching his back during & after feedings.

He's taking a full Prevacid twice per day.  & he does his oatmeal spoon-fed, not in the bottle twice per day.  I guess it helps it sit heavier in the stomach, rather than mixed with the formula?

  • Grace was diagnosed with reflux at 6 weeks and prevacid has done an awesome job with reducing her symptoms (she also takes zantac if it gets really bad) but she did most of what you speak of but not as often. She only eats if sitting straight up or nurse standing up. She choked and aspirated spit up for up to an hour after her feeding (on & off of course). She would choke herself awake at night. It was just awful.

Did your ped do any pH monitoring or take a scope of the esophagus?

  • As far as GI's, I'll be interested to see what they do - I've heard scoping, ultrasound, barium & an x-ray...those are usually some of the first tests.

We're trying VERY desparately not to need a GI.  Obviously, we'll go without hesitation if it's needed, but I keep praying that this routine will keep working bc our next step is a specialist.

What the crap, they let him take it twice a say? Is it the 30mg solutab? Now I feel jipped.

L also does the same thing with her eating, sucks fiercely for 15 seconds then pulls away and screams. We've been giving her 2 Tbls of rice cereal, once a day,  but it really doesn't do anything. She stays congested, that's another thing I forgot about. We stopped using the humidifier in her room because I swear it made her more goopy.

FWIW, how the heck is all that "classic"? That sounds really fricken bad to me. At least L doesn't scream all the time...she's totally laid back, even at her worst.

Sounds like her reflux is pretty normal but it's her swallowing the gets to me..she chokes on the cereal as well when she is spoon fed. Does he do that too? Maybe I'm reading too much into her reflux.

Our pedi. hasn't done anything, yet. She did mention that she'll probably have a barium swallow??

I'm glad to hear that the prevacid and zantac are helping her, that must be a great relief.

  • This sounds just like my LO. We went to the GI in November and DS had to have a tube put down his nose and down into his thoat. It only took a few minutes but it wasn't that bad. GL!

Twice a day, yo.  Our pedi didn't even hesitate.  The once-a-day did well for four days, then the screaming started again.  So we upped to twice a day & BAM! it worked.

He chokes on the oatmeal, more because he's just not developmentally ready to do solids, but what we've found is that he does BETTER with it the thicker it is.  Sounds weird, right?!  But the thicker it is, somehow it's easier for him to manage.

I think "classic" just means that he has every. single. effing. sign of reflux.  Not just spitting up, not just coughing, not just back-arching.

D@mnit. I even sought out a second opinion and she still said no upping it. If I go on Wednesday and they tell us to take more, I might just go Dr. punching.

If reflux were a man, I would kick it in the nuts.

My ped wouldn't up the dose, either. She said just to give zantac as well if it fires back up (no pun intended). She explained how prevacid messes with the babies  blood and digestive system and it is something that takes awhile to work and if it doesn't work than with their age they would want to do further testing and try a new med and she actually had a whole spiel on it. So, don't be too frustrated if they tell you no again :)

::coffee on screen & through nose::

I'm sorry.  Obviously, every kid & pedi is different.

But with the amount of screaming, I think the pedi realized that I was going slightly insane & it just had to stop.  I kept telling him that I could handle 4 hours of crying.  But 11?  12?  13?  for days upon days in a row?  HELL NO.  If he hadn't been screaming so effing much, I doubt he would have done twice per day.  But we were dying, yo.  I was 2 seconds from needing a tranquilizer & a padded room.

  • Natalie's reflux is really mild now but I still remember when she was at her worst.

-You could hear stuff come up but she would swallow and choke on it all the time

    - lots of crying

-arching back and always wanting to be held in an upright position.

-constantly eating to soothe the pain in her throat.

-pushing away bottle then taking it again then pushing it away.
