4 times this week I've had diarrhea/loose stools, usually after eating lunch. I can understand the "whopper jr. incident" but all the others were foods that I usually eat just fine. I'm not having any other signs of PTL that I can tell - no contractions, no bleeding, etc. And the diarrhea usually happens just once a day and then is done. The only reason I'd be a tiny bit concerned is b/c at my appt this past week the dr. kept asking me whether I had frequent or consistent diarrhea. At the time I did not, so I said no and she said that was good. I've had to skip the Colace a couple of times due to this, which is weird for me. I don't feel like this warrants a weekend trip to L&D unless things get worse, but I might call my MFM on Monday just to be sure.
Thoughts?? And sorry for the icky Saturday night topic.
Re: is this a sign of PTL? (TMI)
I also asked over on SAIF and they said they were told that one of the concerns about diarrhea was dehydration, which could then cause contractions. So I'm going to keep drinking tons of water and will call my doc if anything changes.
can't hurt to call.
I had crazy bowel issues when i was pg - i was never constipated - not bad diarrhea a lot- but did have loose stools often and cramping, etc... but only once did it cause me to have to go to L&D for fluids (that was when I got a bug and it was REALLY bad- was going every few minutes all day long - HORRIBLE day peeing from my butt, nice, huh?)
If it's once/day and not an issue otherwise - i'd say you are fine- but if you think you might be losing too much fluids- you could use an IV for a bit. Call and see what the doc thinks - if nothing it will ease your mind- which is always a good thing when pg
Around 22 wks or so, I called my dr. b/c I started having diarrhea but no other signs of PTL. They said it could be a number of things--hormonal fluctuations, dehydration--and advised me to drink plenty of fluids. She said to come in if I started to have any other PTL signs (freq. contrax, menstrual-like cramps, blood, etc.). I had a few bouts of the "scoots" that week but none accomp. by PTL symptoms; it went away shortly after that week. I was sure though to keep drinking lots of water.
Hope you feel better soon!! As always, I'd just call my dr. if I were you to ease your mind and let him/her know of your symptoms. Never hurts.
For me in the hospital, they really only worry about your fluid intake and not being constipated. They always ask if I have bleeding, discharge, contractions or cramping. They also notice if I'm not drinking as much since they refill my pitcher for me when they come check on me (every 2 hours).
As long as you're drinking and there's not blood or contractions/cramping, you should be okay. Wouldn't hurt to call and bring it up though to make sure they don't want to check you or anything.
I had read in Dr. Lukes book that it could be associated with PTL.
I am constipated, by nature. I was born that way. I can sometimes go 3-4 days without having a BM. So when I started getting loose bowels around 32 weeks (with cramping and all) I kinda freaked out. Turns out I was just super dehydrated.
Now, I have been having it again for the last 2 weeks. At least once a day (sometimes up to 3 times), plus bad gas. This is very unusual for me. I asked my OB about it, but she kinda brushed it off. And my mom is thinking maybe its just hormones?
I'm guessing if I've had it for almost 2 weeks, its not from labor yet.
GL!
