Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What could this be? My 14month old DD is losing her voice?

This is the 3rd day now...DD has a raspy voice and it sounds like she just smoked a packed of cigarettes. No other real symptoms. She hasnt slept well at daycare the last day or two. The day I picked her up when I first noticed her voice changed, she had only slept 20 min the entire day! Which is not like her at all. She has coughed a few times, but not because it seems like she is sick, more because something might be bothering her in her throat related to her voice....at least thats what my guts saying. Shes been sleeping like a rock at night. If she was coughing in the middle of the night, then I would think something of it.

I left a message for the nurse, but wanted to see if you guys had any thoughts?

  • Sore throat maybe? Is her nose runnier than usual and has she run a fever at all?

  • When my DS lost his voice he had the croup.  I would probably take her to the doctor and get her checked.
  • is it possible she's just talking weird to be weird? DS will do that--he's not sick, but he talks like he's... straining, I guess. goes through phases.
  • nope. No runny nose and no fever. Strange?

  • DS has had laryngitis twice.  No other symptoms, just lost his "voice".  Pedi said it's fine, just something that happens once in a while.  I try to give him warm things to drink if he'll take them (peppermint tea, broth, etc).  It's kinda hilarious to hear such a little squirt sounding like an 85-year-old pack-a-day smoker though!

No- not at all. I know her voice like the back of my hand. It is bothering her and even when she babbles like normal, she is raspy

  • with out a fever it could just be laryngitis. I hope the nurse calls you back to let you know what to do.  Hope she gets some good naps in today!
