2nd Trimester

Do we get another u/s after the "big one"

I was wondering...is there another u/s scheduled for most of you ladies after the "big one" ?... like arounfd 28-30 weeks? For some reason I thought there was another one after the gender/growth scan but my NP said there aren't anymore unless there's an issue? Does that sound right to you guys?

thanks!

Re: Do we get another u/s after the "big one"

  • I've gotten an ultrasound at every visit....

  • Unless there's an issue, there are usually no more ultrasounds although occasionally one will be schedule late to check on positioning/growth (I think this just depends on your OB's preference).
  • no! and its always so hard for me!!! We did get one when I was overdue I think to check something ...?i think?it was the fluid level.
  • With my DD I had one again round 30ish weeks- but baby was so big you maybe got a pic of the arm or face  or foot.... now I am paying for the 4D ultrasound here in a few weeks...

  • Most times not but if there is a medical reason, im sure they will. I have hypothyroidism so I will have them every 4 weeks after my 20 weeks US>
  • That was how it went with DD.  Only one after the big one was to check amniotic fluid when they were worried about a leak.

  • That sounds right to me.  Most U/S done after the anatomy scan (which is not for gender, BTW) are only when there is a potential problem- they might schedule a growth scan if your uterus measures ahead or behind for several consecutive appointments, or if you go postdates and it looks like you might have a macrosomic infant, or if you're approaching your EDD and they think the baby might be breech, etc.
  • I will only get one U/S at 20 weeks, unless there's cause for concern. But many doctors do more.
  • I think it's pretty standard to not have any after 20 weeks unless they have a medical reason to do so. I'll go back around 28 weeks to check the location of my placenta (which was low at the 20 week u/s).
  • I think I might get one at like 32 or 34 weeks...I don't quite remember though.  My first is at 20 weeks which is next week!
  • It's pretty standard to only get the 20-week scan, unless something needs to be confirmed or checked later on.  I got one at 41 weeks with DS since I was overdue and the Dr. wanted to check amniotic fluid levels and baby size.  But at that point I just wanted to see the baby for real, as in, in my arms!

  • It depends on your doctor.  You should probably ask him/her.  There really doesn't seem to be a reason to have another one though.

  • With this OB, I'll ave my 20 week on Feb 1st, and then one more around 36 weeks to check baby's position.

Unless there is cause for concern, I don't think I will be getting any additional U/S.

  • One at 20 weeks (and that is) is the norm. Some get more.
  • I've gotten an ultrasound at every visit just because of spotting issues, and then not finding the heartbeat on the doppler at another. At my doctor we are supposed to get an ultrasound at every other visit.

My next visit on Wednesday I am not supposed to be getting an ultrasound, but I am because at my big u/s LO didn't cooperate and we couldn't tell the gender. So she said she'd squeeze me in for a gender look and heartbeat only.

  • My Dr told me I would get 2, the initial one and then the big u/s.  I had the big u/s yesterday and they had me schedule another one in 8 weeks due to the fact that I have placenta previa.

So like pp I think the norm is 2, one initial and then the big u/s, unless they have a need to do more.

  • My doc's doing another at around 27 weeks to check my placenta position.
  • Some women get another to check position or size of baby. It's not usually something that is planned way in advance tho!
