I have some things that I think would sell better on craigs list than on ebay. I know you can post an ad, set a price and then sell your item. I guess I was wondering if they charge you a fee for acting as a go between and how long your ad is active for. Do you post an ad by setting up an account?

Super easy, no fees, I think you have to delete your ad or it's up for quite a long time.  You'll need to make an account to post.

You create a free account, no fees to post or sell, and the ads are active for 7 days. If you sell before, you can take down the ad so you will not receive more inquires. The big difference is that it is someone local, and you can request cash only payments (you don't want to get a check from a stranger that might bounce) and you meet the person somewhere to exchange.

Just be careful of scams- someone telling you they will send you a money order to hold the item, etc.  Like PP said, you're best to only accept cash and in person dealings.
