NTR - This is a stretch, but lap band surgery anyone?

My mom is going to have it done soon. I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with it, as far as activity and what to eat afterwards. I know they give you info, but talking to "real" people can give you new ideas...

Re: NTR - This is a stretch, but lap band surgery anyone?

  • A coworker friend of mine had it done a couple years ago. All I know is that she was on a VERY restricted diet afterwards. If my memory serves me right, it was liquids only at first, then soft foods. Now, she is unrestricted (to a point) but she has to be very careful about portion size. She's lost a lot of weight though, like almost 100 lbs so far. She still wants to lose at least 80 more.

This EXCEPT my mom's friend that was on it never really ate correctly and a year after having the surgery done she has only lost 15lbs which she will loose, put back on, and then loose again.  The only real way to loose weight with this surgery and gastric bypass is to completely change your eating habits & exercise which my mom's friend never did.  Sharon Osborne had this surgery years ago and she has kept her weight off, she use to be really big.

  • My best friend had this done almost two years ago.  She was on a completely liquid diet for a couple weeks afterward, then onto soft foods, and finally onto more normal foods.  There are still foods she has to avoid as they are very hard to eat (tough bread, celery, carrots).  She did really great for the first six months or so, but has since stopped following the rules and has plateaued at losing 50 pounds when her goal was to lose 120.

As a PP stated, it really is a lifestyle change.  Unfortunately for my friend she was not willing to change her lifestyle for more than a few months so she has plateaued and I wouldn't be surprised if she started gaining back any day now.

  • My neighbor has had it done.  She's lost @ 100 lbs over the past year.  To me it seems like it would suck.  She has to chew food until it is liquid in her mouth and it takes a looooong time to eat a meal.  We had baked potatoes for lunch one day and it took her about an hour to eat it, she had to put it in the microwave and reheat it b/c it was taking so long.  Also she can't drink while she eats or she will throw up.  She had 10 "fills" for the band throughout the year, but she's done with the free fills so I can imagine her gaining some weight back because who can afford a $200 fill every month or so.
