Does your DC still sit in a high chair?

DS1 will be 22 months old when DS2 starts eating solids.  Not sure if we need to buy a booster or another highchair like the Fisher Price Space Saver for DS2.  At this age (20months) DS1 has to be restrained otherwise he will just jump out.  At what point can they just sit in a booster?  I guess it depends on your LO!  What is your experience?  Thanks

Re: Does your DC still sit in a high chair?

  • DD is 25 months and still sits in her high chair for breakfast since her oatmeal is so messy, but she sits in a booster for lunch and dinner most days. I think she was around 22 or 23 months when she started refusing to sit in the high chair and insisted on sitting in the booster instead. We have the FP healthy care booster seat so it still keeps her contained like a high chair; however, it's not high enough to reach our table, so we have to use the tray with it.

You could get a booster like that for DS1, or you can spend more and get the FP space saver which you can convert to a booster for DS1 later.

  • DD refuses to sit in any kind of booster or high chair anymore. I think it was when she was about 26-27 months. My parents took her to a restaurant and let her sit in the booth without a booster and from then on, she refuses. She basically sits on her bottom at the dining room table and when she gets restless, she moves to her knees. As long as she is eating and not playing, we let her do that. If she starts playing, we ask if she is done eating and if she says yes, we allow her to go to her room and play. We don't expect her to sit at the table until we are finished eating. In a restaurant, we expect her to behave and always have toys or crayons to keep her occupied. DD eats like a bird, so she is always done very fast.

  • DS #2 sat in a booster from day 1 (well... 4 months but you get my point).  Never had a high chair.

As long as the booster has straps you should be good!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • Honestly, neither of the girls will even sit in a booster anymore.  DD#1 stopped sitting in a booster before age 2, I think.  We moved DD#2 into a booster at about 1 b/c we were trying to sell the house and wanted to get the high chair out.  From there, it was only a matter of time before she decided she wanted to be like DD#1 without any booster.  At a restaurant, DD#2 still usually has a booster...but not always.  It's not worth the fight.  Either way, if they're sitting at the table, I don't worry about what they're sitting in.

ETA - We use a combination of bribes and threats to keep the girls in their seats.  For meals, they have to stay sitting even when they're done or go to bed.  Even if they don't like the dinner or eat a single bite, they have to stay at the table and "chat" with the family.  Also, if they sit nicely and eat most of their dinner, sometimes we do dessert.  We don't always do dessert, but they know if we do have any, they only get it if they eat most of their dinner and stay in their seats.

  • DD won't sit in a booster anymore. She sits at the table with us in a regular chair.
  • DD just turned two and still sits in her high chair maybe 80+% of the time.

Most of the time she's happy there, but when she isn't, she likes to use an adult chair. As long as she can manage eating at the table pretty well, we're going to just let her do that without a booster.

  • We just bought a booster seat last week. It doesn't have any straps. Ds sits in it just fine but can't get in or out of it by himself because it tilts over since it doesn't strap to the chair.

  • Ben is 22.5 months and still eats in his highchair.  Granted, he can slip out of the straps (we don't even put them on him anymore) and stands up about a hundred times, but he's still in it.  I've been holding off moving him to the booster because I have his highchair in the kitchen and it's easier to clean up the food he throws on the floor (it's tile) when he's finished vs. the dining room rug - since he'd have to be at the table in the booster.
  • It is about 50/50 whether we do booster chair or the highchair.  I found the booster chair at a thrift store for $2.  It has straps to secure it to a chair and straps to hold Ds in.  It has been a great find.  DS will sit in it when visiting babies use his highchair and he sits in the highchair when my neice uses his booster.  He usually tells me where he wants to sit so I let him decide since he will sit nicer if he gets to pick!

  • no, we switched to a booster seat with straps at 16 months.

  • DS will be 2 at the end of this month. He still sits in his high chair, but I can tell the days are numbered... He's starting to revolt against the chair.

  • i think i ditched the highchair around 18 months and he is in a booster.
  • My DD loves her highchair because when she gets in it she gets to eat. She does the happy dance waiting to get strapped in. We do let her eat her snack at the table if it it something like fruit.
