Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding in public

We are taking Neena on her first outing tomorrow evening and I'm a little worried about breastfeeding in public--We're still getting used to feeding agt home! Neena feeds at least every 2 hours(I'm feeding when she demands), so I know I'll have to feed her while out. Any tips and suggestions from experienced moms? Anything special I should pack in the diaper bag?

Thanks!

  • Tips?  Don't worry about what anyone else says/thinks.  Do what you need to do.  Pack an extra receiving blanket in case you want to cover up... it also is nice to have for burping.  You'll be amazed that nobody else really notices.  You'll do fine!

  • I would bring a nursing cover.  I love the Hooter Hiders and I also have one from Target which works fine as well.  I would also bring some nursing pads if you tend to leak just in case.  Other than that you should be good to go!  At first I was pretty nervous about nursing in public but I have never had any mishaps and I was making a bigger deal out of it than necesssary.  Have fun!

  • Ok, that makes me a feel ab it better. Smile I'm not so much worried about what other people will think, we're still getting used to all of this and I want to make sure Neena and I both comfortable so she has good feedings while out.

If you are going to use a nursing cover or blanket, I'd practice with it at home so that you feel a bit more comfortable and you can get her to latch on properly, etc.

  • No advice the pp covered it all, just wanted to say good for you! I love to see mama's bfing in public. It took me forever to get comfortable with it and now it's a breeze. I think the best day for me was when we were at the beach one day this summer, I was BFing LO under a beach blanket and I heard a whistle to my right and there was another mom BFing and waving at me giving me a thumbs up, she then pointed to the other side of her and there was a group of 3 mom's BFing together. We definately have our supporters out there!

  • GL!  I do it all the time now, and have never gotten any comments or stares.  Sometimes I find it easier to nurse in the car (while it's running) though.  We're more comfortable, and at this age, DD will not keep a blanket over her head.
