Nanny Question

I started working for my sister this week. I'm a SAHM and she needed someone to watch her two kids (2 years and 8 months) on Mon-Wed. We haven't really talked about money - although she mentioned paying me $200 a week. I have to drive 60 miles each day to her house - $70 worth of gas.

What do you pay for childcare and what do you think is a fair price?

Re: Nanny Question

  • This is a regional question - here, the going rate is between $12-$20 per hour for part time help (which is what I use).  My nanny lives about 50 minutes away driving and we pay her $12/hour.

  • I pay my full-time nanny minimum wage; she drives 25 miles to our house.  Her guaranteed weekly rate for 51 hours a week is $352 (this is her take home pay; we pay all taxes on top of that).  If she works more than 51 hours, she gets paid overtime.
  • You really need to find out what the going rate is in your area. Here in metro Boston where childcare is $$$$, DH and I split our nanny's $18 an hour with our downstairs neighbors. So in effect it is $9 an hour per child.

  • I live in southern California and pay my nanny $16/hr to watch my DS (2 years).  She drives 40 miles roundtrip each day.

If you are going to be working 8 hrs/day 3x week...then she is not even offering to pay you $10/hr.  That is extremely low, especially living in California. I would definitely try negotiating a higher price.  I would say at least $10.

  • I agree with the above-posts. I live in San Diego and paid $10 per hr plus gas money and that was for 1 child. For 2 children, you should get paid $18 an hour plus gas money.  Only you know your sister's financial situation but you really have to be careful to not get ripped off, otherwise, it will create a huge mess later when you decide it isn't worth it. Your time is valuable and you're experience. However, you are bringing your child with you to work so that may mean less money.

look for nanny postings on craigslist or call local daycares and see what they  charge per child per week and then do the calculation from there. An in-home nanny is more money than a day care center, obviously. Good lucK!

  • It really does vary.

I pay $13 an hour to our nanny (she works 3 days a week) - this is cash.

Previously I paid $15 an hour to a SAHM who watched my kids plus her daughter at her house.

I think both prices are in the fair range.
