Does anyone give their 1 YO 2% instead of whole milk?

Now that we have weaned Grey from formula we have been doing the whole milk thing.  I was thinking about switching hom to 2% since that is what Elle drinks.  I will ask the pedi on Thursday but I was wondering if anyone else was going with the lower fat milk?

  • According to my pedi they need the fat from whole milk until they are 2 years old.

    My pedi says this also

  • They need the extra fat for proper brain development, I believe.
  • The fat from the whole milk is good for brain development. Of course, there are many kids who don't drink milk at all, and they should get the healthy fats from other sources. If he will drink milk, I'd stick with whole milk. It's the same amount of milk being used whether you buy a gallon of each or 2 gallons of the same kind :)

  • Our ped didn't care if DS drank 2% or whole.

  • yup- our pedi had us start Griffin on whole milk- just so he'd transition easier- then after a few weeks switch to 2%.  He was in the 95th percentile for weight/height - so didn't need the extra fat - b/c he was a good eater otherwise (table food).

We recently switched him to 1% - b/c he still eats great - i don't see any need for the extra fat since 1% still has a good amount. My pedi said that is fine.

  • We did 2% from age 1 to about 2 or so. We couldn't get him to drink whole milk. I did give him YoBaby yogurt that was made with whole milk. He doesn't seem to be any worse for the wear, considering the lack of fat. :)

ditto this    they need the fat for brain development    whole milk yogurt also, not low-fat

  • I thought I had read about the change, but since we don't have any of the risk factors we may just keep going with the whole milk.
  • Our pedi told me to give DS 2% at 12 mos.  He has been in the 90-97th% tile for height/ weight since he was born, though.  Also, as the pp started, the views on whole milk have been updated.
