If you are going natural...(clicky poll)

If your labor does not go as expected, at what point would you accept medication?

  • Also, if they have to induce me with Pitocin, I would get medicated.  Pitocin contractions are 10 times worse than regular ones.

  • I told DH that the scenario where I really don't want an epi is if I make it all the way to transition or full dilation - I do not want to get it just before pushing! That's a big part of why I don't want an epi in the first place, I want to be able to push properly and feel what I'm supposed to be doing. Plus, if I'm so close to the end - I think I would be really disappointed about 'caving' at the last minute.

When I would consider an epi is if labor has been really really long and exhausting and I'm not progressing, and I'm still only 5 or 6cm. If the only way to go forward is to get the epi and get some rest I will consider it.

  • I didn't vote because I don't really know how to answer it. I want very much to go natural but am open to medication if I reach a point where I feel I can go no further on my own.  I am scared to death of receiving an epidural because I have a tremendous amount of back problems as it is and feel that introducing a needle into my spine will only make things worse.  Also, I'm scared of the c-section conversation and hope to avoid it completely.
  • If I'm tired, I'll go for Ambien or something to sleep before I go for an epi.  I'm always confused by people who say they get an epi so they have energy to push...but they can't really push like they would if they hadn't gotten one at all!

I'm smart enough to play it by ear, but I'm not saying I'll get it if labor is too long/hard.  DH will help me make that decision.  I won't be in my right mind and will want it too early otherwise. Smile

  • Well since we are planning a homebirth there will be no options for meds unless for some small reason we need to transfer for a c-section

  • I'm hoping to avoid an epi all together, but we are open to other medication choices depending on what type of labor I am having!
  • With my first child, I was content going natural, however I got scared.  I had this anxiety attack that DD would need to be delivered by C-section or there would be some sort of emergent situation  and they would just have to do it anyway.  So I opted to have the epi with DD.  All in all, it was a great choice I dilated quicker b/c I was relaxed and I only had to push for 8 minutes.  I had plenty of energy to push and could feel enough to know when I had to push.

     This.  If I have to have a med-free birth, I don't see why I should have a pain-med-free birth.

Also, if it looks like I'm going to tear like crazy, or need an episiotomy, I want a local.
