How amd I supposed to know if I have the flu or mastitis?

I recently weaned and since late last week I have had flu symptoms: aches, chills, headache, fatigue. I had mastitis in the beginning and the symptoms were the same. I had terrible clogged ducts/hard boobs last week.

How am I supposed to know if I have the actual flu or mastitis again?

Re: How amd I supposed to know if I have the flu or mastitis?

  • Do you have red blotchy patches on your breast and is it tender?  Also, are you running a fever?  Those were the two big things that my doctor said to key in on.

  • Loading the player...
  • I don't have a fever or blotches, but I didn't have those symptoms the first time either. My boobs are EXTREMELY tender to the touch. Especially where I worked out the clogged ducts.
  • Call your regular doc.  They can do a flu test on you and then you can go from there.
  • I would try applying a warm compress inbetween feedings and keeping that side empty through either feeding or pumping every 2 to 3 hours.  Then watch your temp...if it spike above 100 then call your obgyn.  I had it when my son was a week old, and I think I had it again a few weeks ago... I did those two things this time and it cleared up without antibiotics.
