3rd Trimester

Full bladder for ultrasound?

I'm looking at the instructions for my 20 wk. u/s on tuesday, and it says to empty my bladder 1 hour before the appointment, then drink 32 oz of water within a half hour and not use the restroom again until the appointment.  Is this the norm?  My friend who is about 5 weeks ahead of me did not have to do this for her big u/s.

I feel like I'm peeing every half hour now, and thats only after drinking normal amounts of water, not chugging 32 oz within a half hour.  I feel like I'm going to be so uncomfortable and focused on not peeing my pants I won't be able to focus on the ultrasound and what the tech is telling me.

  • Oops meant to post this in second tri.  Responses are welcome though, please and thank you!

  • I had to do that for the NT scan about 12 weeks, but not the "big" u/s at 20
  • I wasn't told anything about drinking water for the big one. GL!
  • Yep, I had to do this.
  • That was my instructions too... However, I peed 3 times after drinking, including once right before I went into the u/s room and they saw everything just fine. I wouldnt worry too much about it.

  • I had to do this. I had to go to the bathroom so bad that they tech told me to stop her if I needed to get up and go. I made it through the appointment, but had to go immediately after.
  • I was instructed that full bladder was only needed for first tri ultrasounds, not 2nd. So no full bladder for me at 20w.
  • Thanks guys!  I'll follow the instructions but I don't think I'm gonna let myself get to the point of peeing my pants.  I don't want to be a miserable biatch for such an exciting doctors appointment!

  • I also had to start with a full bladder. She let me go about 1/2 way through.

  • I had to do exactly the same thing for my 20 week u/s. And I was nervous about it too, but once I got to the ultrasound I did get distracted by the baby. Near the end though I had to go really bad and the tech let me go and then come back and finish the ultrasound. I am sure you won't have any problems!

  • Never had to do that for any ultrasound I had.
  • Yep, I had to do it for both my US.
  • For my first ultrasound I had to wait two hours with a full bladder. Not that it was required, they just didn't tell me. Luckly I had decided to drink a 20 oz coffee and totally had a full bladder. After waiting an hour they told me "Oh yeah! We forgot about you! You'll be able to have it done in an hour, DO NOT PEE!". Freakin pissed me off. It was worth it to see my LO but still!
