Heating up freezer meals?

I posted yesterday that I have never cooked to freeze, or really eaten frozen food before, so I had no idea what to make. I have some good ideas now (thank you!) but now I am wondering about heating the food back up.

The soups seem pretty easy to reheat, but what about the casseroles, burritos, etc? Do you heat these things in the microwave or the oven?

Re: Heating up freezer meals?

  • I would say it depends. Casseroles, lasagna, etc would be in the oven. Burritos (if already fully cooked) could be heated up in oven or microwave.

  • I don't cook the casseroles before I freeze them.  Last night I made two batches of ziti, but stuck it in the freezer before doing the oven part.  Then I'll just heat/bake in the oven and it'll be done.
  • Do you have a toaster oven?? I works great for re-heats, It doesn't seem to dry out as fast as an oven.

  • For casseroles, I generally put them in the freezer uncooked.  I heat them up covered in foil and after about a half hour or so, remove the foil and take them out of the oven when bubbly and done looking.  For burritos, I would heat them in the oven wrapped individually in foil.
  • Hi Ladies.

Butting in here -- do you thaw the uncooked casseroles before reheating them?  Or just take them straight from the freezer to preheated oven?

     Thanks!
