Avent or Dr. Brown bottles?

Re: Avent or Dr. Brown bottles?

  • I used Dr Brown but mostly cause other moms i was friends with did and I got hand me downs... they have been great but if i could do it again I would prob try a bottle with less pieces!

  • I recommend Born Free bottles. I BF, but when DS takes a bottle, it's BF. Not many pieces at all.
  • we used avent with ben and had no problems.  you can't overtighten the tops or else they leak.

with cooper, he did better with the dr. browns b/c they have preemie nipples which are super slow flow.  with the avents, he just dribbled too much.  i should try them again though.  I really don't like dealing with all of the pieces with dr. browns, but now he only takes one bottle a day, so it's not a huge hassle.  If we were doing total bottle feeding, I'd look at the drop ins probably - everyone seems to like those - or else just use the avents.

  • We used Avent with Kaylin and I loved them. They have a drop-in version too called Tempo that we used. I also liked the flexibility of the Avent Via. Lots of options with Avent.

I usually recommend getting just a couple bottles each from 2-3 brands though to start with. It seems a lot of babies are choosy about their bottles in the beginning.

  • Avent's weren't BPA free when I needed to buy bottles so we used Dr. Brown's.  In the beginning we used cheapie 3-for-$2 Gerber 4oz bottles with Dr. Brown nipples, but once he got a bit older he would collapse the nipple and create a bit of a vaccuum int he bottle.  never had that isse with Dr. Brown.  The parts were a pita, but it just becmae something else to do.  no biggie.
  • HATE HATE HATE Avent bottles!!!!!  Doesn't matter tight or not tight on the tops for us they always leaked!!!  Seriously in the middle of the night changing you and the baby is NOT a fun way to go!  I got Cruz to switch to the born free bottles and we LOVE them!  Such a better product than the Avent!

  • We use Dr. Brown since they started with the preemie nipple in the NICU. I've tried other kinds, but they haven't worked as well so we are stuck washing millions of pieces X2. Smile

I would also reccomend having a few types on hand and seeing what works best before stocking up and opening all of the boxes.

    Yup.  This.

And - we tried Dr. Browns, but the nipples are so narrow that she never really took them well.  I found Born Free to work so much better because the wider nipple better mimicked a boob.  Although, she took the Medela bottles okay too.  Who knows?

Anyway - we are strictly on the bottle now and we only use Born Free.  I love them.

  • We started out with Playtex Ventaire and then moved over to Dr. Brown's because of nursing issues and my LC wanted him to use a preemie nipple so the milk would be slow-flowing. I like them A LOT. No leaks. The Ventaire ones are good, too, just not AS good. We use them as secondary bottles.

  • I use both as of right now.  We started with Avent and they too leaked like a mother, but DS had really bad gas problems and I think the Avent are pretty bad for gas.  So we took recommendation from friends and tried the Dr Brown and it worked like a charm.  They are a PITA because of all the parts though.
  • neither

    advent = leaky

dr. browns = too many parts

Playtex drop ins (recyclable and very few parts to clean)

  • I use Avent & would NEVER recommend them! Like Tiffany said they leak far too much & it is very frustrating!

Playtex drop in's are good though :)

  • We use Dr. Brown's Wide Neck and love them.  DS had a really hard time with gas when he started daycare and was getting several bottles a day...the switch to Dr. Browns really helped.   There definitely are a lot of parts though!

  • NOT Advent.  I used drop ins and will do so forever.  But DS was not a picky bottle taker.  The only other bottle DH liked to use was a bottle that used the soothie paci tops for the nipple.  It had a lid that locked so tight nothing ever ever leaked out.

  • DS wouldn't take anything but Dr. Brown. We had a bunch of hand-me-downs and tried them all. I love the sort-fat wide neck ones too - easy to toss in formula scoops and fit better in the stroller cupholder. Different babies prefer different ones - so I'd use hand me downs and not register for too many of one kind until you know for sure....
  • I have been using Born Free and LOVE them!  I started watching my niece last week and she uses Avent and I already HATE THEM.  First bottle I made her leaked all over her cute little outfit and I had to change her. Nuff said.
  • I *JUST* this week pulled out bottles since it was R's 1st week at daycare and he hadn't had one yet....I used Avent with A at daycare when she was a baby, but alas all of hers were not BPA Free.  I took them all back to BRU and got new ones in that recall they had a year or so ago.  I bought new Avent, Medela feeding system and Born Free.  The Medela is great.  Mainly for pumping but I have used the nipple that comes with them too.

The Avent I used 1st since I used them before... THEY SUCK!  I just told DH tonight, I wish I could take them back.  THey leak like crazy.  I know not to overtighten, but with each and every bottle, I have to tip it to see if it's leaking and 9 out of 10 times it is so I have to redo it until it does not.  That's wasting breast milk!

I washed up the Born Free and used them yesterday.  LOVED THEM!  No leaks!

  • We did use the Playtex drop-ins as well with #1.  We went back and forth since she was not a big bottle taker.

One good thing about the avent is that the sippy lids and bottles are all interchangable.   Made for an easy conversion. (DD would not take a bottle after 11 months.. I put a sippy spout on it and viola!  She'd take it again!)

  • HATE Avent!!  I think new moms are drawn to them because there's so many interchangeable pieces?  Who knows?  I seriously hate them though!

My fav's are MAM (https://www.mambaby.com/index.php?StoryID=11156&RefStoryID=11104&ProductID=104), Born Free and Playtex Drop-Ins (whenever there is a baby at the daycare that is having a hard time latching onto a nipple, a playtex drop in with a laytex nipple almost always does the trick!)
