Low thyroid during pregnancy?

Has anyone dealt with this or is currently dealing with it?  My test results came back and along with a Vitamin D deficiency, my thyroid is on the low side.

It doesn't seem to be concerning the midwives too much since they just told me they wanted it tested again at my 12-week appointment, but of course I am a constant worrier and am curious about treatments but too afraid to Google further after seeing a few things I really didn't need to.

Re: Low thyroid during pregnancy?

  • For one... don't google... it's Friday and if you find anything  out you'll be freaked out until Monday and for two... I look at work to see if we have any info about hypothyroidism and pg. (I work for a Dr.)

How low are you (how high is your TSH)?

  • I know, Googling = dumb.  I actually didn't ask the nurse what the number was.  All she said was that it was on the "low side."  I figure I'll discuss more with my midwife at my next appointment and if they were truly considered, they would have me do more than just have it tested again at my next appointment.

I'm probably jumping the gun worrying about it, but it's nice to hear from others who have experienced the same thing.

  • I have been on 25mg of Thyroid meds since early in my pregnancy which is a very low dose. It's not a big deal at all - it's just something that needs to stay level and regulated. I wouldn't worry, it's a small issue. Just one of those things that your body does sometimes because of the pregnancy. I had no noticable side effects. I have to get a blood draw each time I go in, that's the only inconvenince about it really.

  • You may email me if you'd like to talk more about this. DS #2 has congenital hypothyroidism (born w/o a working thyroid which is rare). I am not comfortable about doing this on the boards but I probably can give you some resources at least. All of my books about thyroids are at my work but I'd be more than happy to give you more information on Monday.

This for me also.  They noticed mine was low at my 6 week appt.  They just started me on low dose meds and I haven't noticed anything different at all.  And I don't even have to get my blood drawn at every appt.

  • Thanks for your responses, ladies.  I have a feeling this is just something we'll need to monitor throughout my pregnancy.
  • My BFF was "dangerously low" at her 14 week appt and they were not at all concerned, made a non issue of it and gave her meds.  She and her son are just great to this day.
