weaning nursing to sleep

Does anyone have any suggestions?  My little one loves to nurse to sleep, but I'd really like to be done with bf (she is almost 14 months old).  It really the only time she *wants* to bf is sleepy time.  Advice anyone?
I give up trying to add my kids' photos. Just know that they are adorable.

  • saw this on supernanny! She told the mom to give the baby a bottle and position her as if they were BFing but block your breast with a pillow.

Not sure I'd do something just because it was on Supernanny.  Indifferent

What you want to do is break the association of eating = going to sleep (which the Supernanny thing wouldn't help with anyway).  Your DD may be old enough to switch to sippy of milk, bath, book, bed.

My DS still nurses to sleep, so I really have no idea.  Just a suggestion.

  • Im affraid this will happen with me, my LO is only 7 months (almost) and he readlly only cares to nurse when he is sleepy! so far I havent found anything that works, let me know if you get any usefull info!
  • I broke it by giving her a bottle, then bath and bed.  Before I would put her in the crib I would rock her and give her a pacifier.  It took awhile but it did work.
  • I used the pull-off method in the No Cry Sleep Solution around 12 months.  He still needed to nurse to sleep until 16 months when he just outgrew the need.  He started pulling off on his own and asking to be laid in his crib.  He would roll over and fall asleep.  We still nurse before sleep, but we don't nurse to sleep.

This is somewhat encouraging.  Was he persistant prior to 16 months old?  My LO is very persistant about wanting to nurse to sleep.  We are trying the pull off method right now.

  • I nursed until my daughter was 16 months old and had to wean because I caught a bad cold and needed to take medication that wasn't compatible with breastfeeding.  At that point I was still nursing her to sleep so it was a rough few nights.  Previously I tried the pull off method from the NCSS, but that didn't work.  I ended up rocking her for a bit and then I put her in the crib. I sat next to the crib until she fell asleep.

Very persistant--needing to nurse to a deep sleep and getting upset when I pulled him off.  I just kept doing the pull-off method and allowing him to latch back on if he got upset.  It was like one day he decided he didn't want to nurse to sleep anymore.  He only falls asleep at the breast now if he is really exhausted.
