Babies: 9 - 12 Months

THISCLOSE to having a nervous breakdown, help people.

So Jax and I have been sick for 2 days. Cough, runny nose, feverish.

Last night at midnight, I went to Walgreens to get him Benadryl. It took a while to kick in so I spent about an hour and a half rocking my sniffling, coughing, whimpering little guy, and finally got to sleep at 3:15ish.

He woke up for the day at 7:30 and is now refusing to nap. Can I give Benadryl again or should I only do it once a day, at night? Other than a humidifier, Vicks BabyRub, Tylenol/Motrin for fever, nasal saline spray, nasal aspirator and elevating his mattress, what else can I do??

I have 73655752 card orders to work on, not to mention laundry, dishes, cleaning, etc (and a nap that would feel heavenly but so isn't happening). I've come to terms with the fact that I won't shower til tonight. Help. :(

Re: THISCLOSE to having a nervous breakdown, help people.

  • I'd save the Benadryl for allergies only. If he's uncomfortable Motrin is your better option.
  • Loading the player...
  • is he refusing to nap because he's all stopped up or because he just doesn't want to nap?

Is there anyone you could call to come over for a couple hours, even just so you could get a shower and have a chance to breathe?

  • Maybe take a shower with him or sit in a steamy bathroom. The rest just let go for now. The dishes can wait. Poor little baby and mommy. Hope he gets better. Maybe you can nap together.
  • DS was like this last week, it was so terrible =(  I ended up rocking with him in the bathroom while the shower was running, and he fell asleep (I guess the steam helped).

Only other thing I used to do was drive around for almost an hour (he naps well in the car), but it's way too cold here to take him out now.

I'm so sorry you both aren't feeling well.  I have no advice about the Benadryl.  Hope you feel better soon!!

  • We were told we can give DS benadryl for his hives every 6-8 hours.  I wouldn't give it to him just to sleep though, only to help relieve the symptoms he has.

All my friends around here have kids so they're busy themselves. :(

I think he's refusing because he can't breathe...he usually takes a great morning nap.

I'd try to take a bath/shower with him.  That tends to calm Mady (and me) down when we're having one of those days.  Everything else can wait for tonight when Trav gets home, right?

My DD has the same thing - Day 3. I have no advice for you other than to just rock and hold your DS.  The other stuff can wait (except that nap).  I have just been giving her Tylenol as needed.  My pedi said watered down chamomile tea could help break up the mucus, but I haven't tried that yet.  I wish you luck and that your baby feels better soon.

They told us we could give it to DS when he wasn't even 5 months old.

This.  I've heard of Benadryl for hives, but not for a cold or just to sleep.

  • When DS's runny nose became unbearable, pedi told me I could give Benadryl every 6 hours. I never did more than 2x a day though...

  • I am going through this. I know your pain mama. Benedryl is what my pedi recommended too though she also gave me a prescription too if it doesn't work. The bottle says every 4 hours. I give it every 6 while she is awake. So yes, I would say give him some more!

I don't want to jinx it but I'll just say there is no movement on the video monitor and I *may or may not* get to eat lunch in quiet....

    LOL

    Feel better!

  • A humidifier does wonders during sleepy time for us if ds is stopped up.

If he wakes up again, I may need to, thanks! Do you know what the Rx is for?

Rondec syrup. 1ml 4x daily for 5 days.
