In October, right after she turned 1, Jillian started putting herself to sleep. The day when I was able to put her wide awake in the crib and she went to sleep, I swear that the heaven's opened up, beautiful hymns played and the angels' rejoiced and I even think I heard a few hallelujahs and amens (and I'm not particularly religious).
Things went beautifully until just before New Year's. She cries the second she realizes I'm taking her to the crib at night and then fusses for 5 minutes or so before quieting down. About 30-45 minutes after going down she starts crying and screeching. Typically this lasts about 15 minutes. Sometimes I go in to check on her and give her the pacifier (which she throws). She is often laying down. When I'm at home I don't let her out of the crib, because I've done that and just as soon as the tantrum subsides she just wants to play and we have to do the whole thing over again. If I'm not home, DH tends to cave to her cries.
I hate baby sleep problems. I can't ever seem to figure them out. It could be her molars growing in, but tylenol and orajel don't stop the pattern. She will happily go to sleep at naptime also. The only thing I know is that I can't cave in to her demands to be awake. She needs to sleep, I need to get to bed at a reasonable hour, and I don't want to establish bad sleep habits.
Has anybody experienced this before?
