Switching formula causes reflux...almost 2 weeks later?

So Baby D has been on Nutramigen for quite some time b/c of a milk protein allergy that had her pooping blood.  The pedi told us we could try adding an oz at a time of Similac to her regular bottles to see how she handled the reintroduction of milk-based products.

We are almost 2 weeks in to 1/2 & 1/2 bottles (Similac Advance orwhatever and Nutramigen) and we have been excited b/c she was doing great.  The pedi even said at her last appointment, "just make it 100%!  If she was going to react negatively, she would have by now!"

But we held on to the 1/2 & 1/2 bottle plan because, well, I'll be honest:  we had tons of Nutramigen sitting around and we figured we might as well use it up.

And all of a sudden she is having hard, awful, mean, painful burps.  The kind that cause her to gag/cringe before they come, yelp in pain as she burps, and whimper after she burps.  Last night she randomly woke up screaming bloody murder, stopped when I picked her up, and started again when I put her on the changing table.

We have no previous experience with reflux...  Is this what reflux looks like?  We're going back to 100% Nutramigen today to see if these symptoms go away.

  • It does sound like some of the reflux symptoms that my LO had. FWIW as soon as I stopped dairy products those symptoms went away - so I think there can be reflux-like reactions in a milk protein intolerance.

  • Interesting!  Thanks, kit.  I'm hoping she's like new today after getting back on her beloved Nutramy.  ;)

  • GL, I hope she is back to her darling self soon!
  • DS was on nutramigen for a milk protein allergy.  We tried switching to similac and he didn't do well either.  He had TONS of spit up.  Without going into the different brands of formulas and what is in them.  I am going to recommend trying enfamil premium lipil.  We haven't had a single problem with that.  Try going back on nutramigen to let his stomach settle then try the lipil.  It worked for us Big Smile
