Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Tax returns

I'm not a tax person, but tell me if this makes sense:

DH works full time, I work part time, DD was born in March 2009. We don't own a home or have anything else to deduct or claim or whatnot except for DD tax credit and daycare credit. We don't make a ton of money, pretty average.

I just did a draft from our year end pay stubs and it looks like we owe. Does this seem right? I thought for sure this year with having a baby we'd get something back :(

Re: Tax returns

  • Doesn't seem right to me, although I don't know too much about taxes either.

I had the same circumstances and I'm getting a lot back, a lot more than I even thought. It could have to do with what percentages were taken out of your paycheck maybe? or maybe something was typed in wrong?

Hopefully its just a mistake and you end up getting money back!

I know, and this is really a vague scenario I'm throwing out... but it just doesn't seem right to me. I thought for sure we'd be getting something back!

I checked over our federal with holdings and DH had the same amount withheld as I did - but he works 2x as much as I do. So maybe they screwed up at his work, not holding out enough.

I think this is the year I bite the bullet and take my taxes to someone professional. There has to be something I'm doing wrong.

  • It could be the the claim level on your W-2's that is making you owe money. I know that when I changed my federal income statement from just myself (single) to Married and a child I got more money in my pay stub because the money I was paying in taxes in each paycheck decreased meaning I may have to owe money because of that this coming tax season.

  • Sounds like you need to increase your withholdings, the refund you thought you were getting got eaten up by what you owe. That happened to us last year, I was supposed to get $1K back but DH didn't have enough taken out so we ended up owing over $800, sucks
