Babies: 9 - 12 Months

I guess I'm failing as a mother b/c DS doesn't crawl!

DH just came home from work and said "I'm really surprised that you don't research more exercises to do with him to teach him how to crawl.  You really need to be reading more books.  You don't read up on anything."  My head is ready to explode!  He is now mad at me, because I'm mad at him!

  • you really should explain to him that some babies never crawl...and there is nothing wrong with that.

  • DS just started crawling. Don't stress and don't let the DH get to you.?

  • Then I'm failing, too!  My DH wants DD to crawl, but I'm perfectly fine with being able to surround her with toys and cleaning and not having to worry about her getting into anything.  Someone probably made a comment to him about it so he decided to blame you today.  I'd give DH a kick to the head if he said something like that to me.  Your LO will crawl when it's time.  My DH never crawled...he just started walking one day (according to my MIL).

  • I did, I explained that he might go straight to walking.  All babies hit milestones at different times.  Ughhh - SO annoyed right now.  I am helping him work on standing, and spending some time on his tummy with a toy tempting him out of his reach.  Should I be doing more???
  • You can't teach a baby to crawl.  You can encourage him (with tummy time, lots of time sitting on the floor), but he just won't until he's ready.
  • no, you are doing fine!  my best friend never crawled and was walking before 1.  he will crawl when he is good and ready to.

  • I never crawled when I was a baby and I turned out just fine. Oh, and if he is so concerned about LO not crawling then maybe HE needs to research what to do.
  • My DS isn't crawling yet either...he tries so hard but just hasn't figured out how to go forward yet.  I've tried lots of things with him too but in the end it's all going to come down to when he is ready to do it.  What your DH said sounds like something my DH has said about DS not sleeping well...so I feel your pain.  Just keep doing what you are doing and be supportive of your LO...he will reach these milestones when he's ready.
  • Well, clearly the problem is that your BABY doesnt read. If he could read, then he would be able to read the books to teach him how to crawl. Books are the answer. I suggest you buy the "Your Baby Can Read" dvd series.

You're not doing anything wrong!  Keep doing what you've been doing if you want to encourage your DS...that's all you can do.  My DD doesn't always want to be on her tummy so I do the tempting toy thing when she lets me.  She is an expert sitter now so I surround her with things just out of her reach when she is sitting and she does the lunge and gets into crawling position, but doesn't stay on her knees long.  I think this helps her get stronger in general.  No worries!!!

  • Don't blame yourself (or let your DH make you feel bad).  Caro isn't crawling at 11m and I've done everything I can possibly think of to encourage her.  You're doing a great job :)

Yes  what the hell is stopping HIM from researching/reading/encouraging your son to crawl?!?  he's a parent too, right?  if he's so worried about it maybe HE should start teaching him.

but you're fine-like pp's said every baby hits milestones differently, and some just skip crawling completely.  don't worry about it.
