Have you steamed and frozen chunks of veggies for finger foods?

Specifically I am thinking about doing this with butternut squash.  I was thinking steam, freeze in chunks, defrost in micro at lower power and serve?  Does that work, or do they defrost in little puddles?  I looked at wholesome baby foods website, but didn't find any info.  Thanks!

  • I didn't steam it, I baked it. Cut in half, lay open side down in about and 1 of water. Then you cut out the chunks. It might be a little mushy but I would think it would be fine.

  • Yep, I have a bag of butternut squash cubes in the freezer. I've done it with carrot sticks too.

  • IME, squash gets really watery and runny when defrosted.  DS likes it slushy, to the point where it's like a snowcone.

  • Yes, I've done this (although I baked my fruits and veggies). I've done it with butternut squash, pumpkin, and apples. Butternut squash and pumpkin are watery, but I drain them after defrosting and that worked fine.
