Babies: 9 - 12 Months

I feel like banging my head off of a wall. Help!

DS first got hives after his 4 month shots.  They showed up slightly less than 24 hours after the shots, lasted a few days and went away.  The pedi told us to just watch to make sure he could breathe ok and to take him to the ER if he started having trouble or if he started swelling.

This is his 2nd set of hives.  He's had them now for 2 weeks.  They started on Christmas Eve.  They got so severe that by the day after Christmas we were told to take him in to Children's Hospital because his eyes were swelling.  By the time we got there they'd improved a lot and the hospital told us that they can't do anything for hives, but to give him benadryl and follow up with his pedi.

We brought him in to the pedi and they were like, yeah, he has hives.  We can't do anything for hives.  Give him the benadryl if the hives are really bothering him, but don't worry about it if they're not.

DS HATES the benadryl and he was gagging so much from it that he was throwing up.  We opted to just let him ride the hives out since they didn't seem to be bothering him nearly as much as the medicine.

The  hives have been coming and going, but definitely hadn't involved swelling for over a week.

Tuesday night he had his 6 month shots.  They said it was fine for him to get them since the hives could be here for weeks.  Well wouldn't you know it, less than 24 hrs after getting them his hives are sever again.  His face was so swollen by the time I picked him up from MIL's house last night after work that I was practically in tears when I called DH and told him to go out and find Benadryl in another flavor because we HAD to get something into him to help.  Poor DS kept rubbing at his severly swollen eyes.

We got him to take some benadryl and the hives looked a little better, but he was still rubbing his eyes.  He did seem to be rubbing a little less though.

I called the pedi this morning because I really think that this is a reaction to his shots and I'm worried about what will happen next time since this time is soooo much worse than last time.

The nurse line told me that he needs to be seen by the pedi right away.  What?  Why?  You guys have told me repeatedly that you can't do anything for hives!  She said that sometimes they'll give steroids when they're on the face.  This is not in line with what the pedi and the hospital told us the last few times we took him in.

I seriously feel like banging my head off of a wall.  I can't not take him to the pedi because what if something is different this time and something bad happens to him?  At the same time though I feel like we're just wasting so much money going to the Dr. to hear the same thing over and over again.

Sorry this is so long.  I just seriously don't know what to do.

  • ((Big Hugs)) I am so sorry your DS is going through this, and that you are going through it. I would take him to the pedi because like you said, you dont want something bad to happen. I would be a little pushy while there though and question him/her about the shot they can give. I hope your little guy gets better soon!

  • I am so sorry.  I don't have any advice, but I hope your DS is feeling better soon.
  • I'm so sorry robbie and poor Des.  I would go to the pedi and demand that they do something about the hives and stop pushing it off.
