anyone's lo have rsv?

I posted yesterday about DS having a cold on day 3 of daycare and me going back to work and it got way worse over night...coughing more, so stuffy having trouble breathing he is so clogged ( i am using the syringe often but it's hard to get it all as he pulls away and screams), and then this morning he had a fever of 100.7 rectally. I called out of work and am waiting for the dr. office to open and call to get in. I just get so worried b/c I know rsv is more common in preemies. ( DS was 33 weeker) How can you tell the diff?  does the doctor just have to swab and find out? Thanks...this is DS's first sickness and I'm just a little freaked out. Also, if your LO had RSV were the hospitalized or just treated with meds?

  • I replied on 6-12 too but first, if he does have it, it will be ok.

Lily got it the week before Christmas.  I have been so careful (aside from daycare, but it is a hospital daycare, so...) in not taking her anywhere, basically keeping her in hiding.  Unfortunately, it just happens sometimes.

On Friday night, she had 3 really bad coughing fits.  It was very scary and had she had one more, I would have taken her to the ER.  However, she settled down and I took her to the doctor first thing Saturday morning.  I asked her to be tested for RSV and they complied, and at the very last second turned positive.

They sent us home with a nebulizer and albuterol.  I was absolutely terrified and felt like a complete failure.  I had a small breakdown at the doctors office and continued to feel terrible every time I had to give her a treatment, but she was fine.  I gave her the piece for older kids (not the mask) and let her chew on it and she would hold it in her own mouth.  She did have a fever for a few days--motrin and tylenol.  She also had a very small appetite which was very scary for me.

One recommendation--www.nosefrida.com.  It is the best snotsucker out there.  The bulb does nothing in comparison to this thing.  You can also get it online at BRU.com.

((Hugs)).  I know it is VERY scary but you will get through it!!

  • Thank you so much for your words! We just got back from doc...upper resp. infectiona nd ear infection and if cough gets worse in 2 days they will swab him...apparently they only swab for rsv at the pedicatric ER and don't want to send him if it's not RSV...so i have to keep a close eye. Thanks so much I'm going to that site now!
