Babies: 9 - 12 Months

For everyone who is still BF...

I want to BF until he is at least a year old, but I am running into some problems.  He is biting me now that he has the bottom 2 teeth.  I have tried to say NO very firmly, I have also stopped feeding him then putting him back on to show that the food stops if he does it, but he is still biting.  What else can I try, because I really can't stand  the feeling! Please help.

  • eventually he will (hopefully) lose interest.

DS always laughed when he did it and i screamed, so i quit reacting at all and he got bored with it.

I also try to pay a LOT of attention to how his mouth is moving, so i can kind of know when it's coming. And sometimes he does it because he wants me to look at him lol. If i feel like he's just playing and not fully eating, i pull him off and wait a min or two.

It definitely sucks. I had scabby teeth marks for a little while, but eventually we figured it out. Good luck! I hope he gets over it very very soon!

  • I usually yelp in pain, then push his face into my breast.  This serves the purpose to let him know immediately what he did was not good and to make him release, since his nose is then covered.  This was suggested by a Lactation person and it is pretty effective.
  • DS did it for about a week after he got his bottom teeth and then about a week after he got his top teeth.  Whenever he bit, I took him off immediately (I'm not sure how much of that was self-preservation and how much was trying to teach him).  Also, he usually did it after he was pretty much done and if I paid attention, I'd realize he was finishing up and could prevent the biting.
  • we went through a phase. he tried to bite for a let down.

i told him no. put him down. i even gave him a bottle of sample formula.

he no longer bites... unless it's an accident. he also won't take a bottle of BM anymore. I guess I ruined that for him too. he's all sippy and breast now.
