Oversupply, anyone?

I have a very forceful letdown that causes my DD to choke EVERY time. She pops off and milk continues to spray. It is a messy and socially awkward occurence. She also then won't relatch because she's exhausted from gagging/sputtering/choking so 45 minutes later she's rooting again.

I also have a pianful letdown and this happens when I'm not nursing.Anyone have this problem? How can I help DD not choke? Thanks!

Re: Oversupply, anyone?

  • Yes I had the same problem when DS was younger.  I would hold a burp cloth/towel at my boob under LO's ching everytime I nursed.  That way when he unlatched and I started spraying everywhere, I could catch it.  It helps to hand express once letdown occurs, for a couple minutes then have LO latch back on.  Over time it does regulate.  I only spray DS now if I get engorged, like if he skips a nursing session.  When DS was first born I also had a painful letdown.  It would happen whenever I thought of him or if I smelled his clothes or heard him cry.  It was crazy! Eventually that went away too.  All of it is just temporary, hang in there!

  • My LC suggested leaning back a bit while nursing so that gravity would help the milk slow down.  Good luck!
  • Recline a bit when you're NIP.  When possible, nurse in the side-lying position (this allows your LO to let any excessive milk that she can't handle drip out the side of her mouth).

It sounds like you have a forceful let down, moreso than an oversupply based on your description... but if oversupply is an issue (are you still in full-spray mode after your LO is done nursing?), you can try nursing from one breast per feeding.

I know kellymom.com has a few other tricks... I had to use them when my DD was nursing.
