My son had those exact symptoms in late August. He had been on antibiotics for an EI, but the fever started after he had finished. I then started to notice some hives (I responded to your previous post). I brought him into the pedi. who thought he had yet another EI. Prescribed a different anti-biotic. Gave him one dose, and a few hours later his hands and feet swelled and the hives were covering his body. I rushed him to pedi. who thought he had some virus I had never heard off. We were put into the hospital for observation. The next day the fever broke, but the hives remained.
At the time, they thought he was allergic to an antibiotic, but you do not get a fever with a reaction and he had been on those antibiotics before. We have since had to go through all the allergy testing just to be safe. He been tested against almost all of them and has not had a reaction. The Dr. now believes it was a virus.
I've never heard someone have a similar experience - especially with the hand and feet swelling, so I wanted to message you. It took about 7 days for the hives to disappear. We gave him Claritin every 24 hours. He looked AWFUL! Like you said - like he had been in a fight.
Re: Cubbymama
That's so strange! K just got off antibiotics about 2 days before the whole thing started, too, but we figured it couldn't be a reaction to that because it would've happened at the beginning, not after she'd been on it for 10 days and off it for 2. Anyway, she looks MUCH better today, so I'm hoping it's all gone, whatever it is. Thanks so much, and I'm glad your little guy got through it OK too!
