Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Did you keep your LO away from other babies until they got their first round of shots??

My friend doesn't want James around her 6 week old baby b/c, "we're aren't exposing the baby to any children until he get his first round of shots".  I was like, "ok, I guess".  I told her that James wasn't sick or anything and why would I allow my baby to touch or mess with an infant anyway?

I understand not wanting to take newborns out in public until they're 4-6 weeks old to keep them from getting ill.  But I don't understand why the first round of shots makes any difference - they're not shots for the common cold or the flu - goodness!  I've been wanting to see my friend's new baby and haven't yet been able to.  It's a day trip for me to go so it makes since for me to bring James since I'm still BFing. I guess I'll have to wait or see if DH isn't on call one weekend. Huh?

I also wanted my other good friend who is coming with me to finally meet James.  But oh well - I guess we won't be able to kill two birds with one stone.

  • My sister was here with her 5 yr old and almost 2 yr old for a week after we had dd. She sounds just like an over paranoid new mom you'll have that sometimes

see, this is how I feel - and it's kinda driving me nuts.

  • Yes, we were advised to limit visitors and no children until at least first round of shots when we left the NICU and again at our first pedi visit as DS is a preemie.  Preemies are at high risk of developing complications from RSV and their immune systems are not as strong as even a full term baby.

  • Our pedi suggested this as well having a winter baby during flu season for 6 weeks. And she was not a NICU kid.
  • I supposed they could be concerned about rotovirus?  It's relatively common and generally included among the first innoculations.

  • I understand preemies.  What do the shots have to do with RSV?  Is it purely the age and not the shots?

Doesn't really make much sense though if the other child has been vaccinated for those. Right?

  • You know, I was this way too. I just think that she doesn't feel comfortable with it yet and as much as it kinda bothers you it's just her trying to do her thing. Hindsight, I was a little paranoid but ya know I just did what I felt was right at the time.

Yes, I know.  Still annoys me though.
