Getting ready to pump at work?

I'm going back to work in a few weeks and currently I only pump in the AM and right before bed (and during the night if I get engorged and he doesn't eat much). Not set times right now. I plan to pump 3 or so times a day at work plus once in the morning before I leave and probably still at night while DH gives LO his bottle. Do I need to start feeding him at certain times or pumping to establish a routine or just go and start that when I go back to work? Thanks!

Re: Getting ready to pump at work?

  • just curious what others will say since i'm in the same boat.

I planned on starting to give him a bottle during the day (pretending like i'm at work) but it totally failed. he HATES it -but someone mentioned that he probably hates it b/c it's coming from me -he knows i got the good stuff right near the bottle. So now i plan on having my Hubby give him a bottle at night but i'm not sure if that's going to be a problem since i'll be at work during the day.

so i'm looking forward to what others say

  • I used this schedule when I returned to work:

Pump at 10 am - pump or nurse DS at lunch 12 pm - pump at 2 pm - nurse at home at 5 pm.

I now pump 2x a day at 10:30 am and 4 pm.  I am still able to produce 12 ounces a day which is what DS needs for daycare.  If I needed to I could throw in 2 - 3 extra pumping sessions.

  • I established a routine when I got back to work and pump every 3 hours.
  • when i first returned to work, this was my schedule

    200am nursing session

    600am nursing session

    930am pump

    130pm pump

    500pm nursing

700pm nursing...then off to bed for sam

i would pump before going to bed but dropped that really quick because i didn't need the milk and was producing enough during the day...i was doing it before to create a freezer stash for emergencies and after you start work again, the last thing you wanna do is have any uncessary pump sessions

good luck..you will find a routine that works for you
