I'm nervous

Last week, we got notices on our doors that a lady was mugged by a guy with a knife right in her carport in front of her condo.  It's a building that's down the street from ours, so it's not like it happened close or anything, but still scary.  So, I am not interested lately going outside by myself or anything when it's dark.

James is gone tonight.  He'll be home around 9:30.

It smells really bad like burning.  Nothing is burning in my home.  I think my upstairs neighbor is having a fire in his fireplace, maybe burning something that shouldn't be burned and it smells BAD like the place is on fire.  I took Sadie outside to check on things real quick, and my upstairs neighbor is home and wondering around and our only other neighbor is home as well.  There is no orange glow.  The upstairs neighbor's window is open so I'm pretty sure it's coming from there.

I have been in two house fires...like I was home and my house was on fire, so I get a little extra nervous about this kind of stuff.

I should just go upstairs and ask the guy if he's having a fire in his fireplace and set my mind at ease, but I have only talked to him a couple times and I don't even want to go outside.

Just venting.  Hopefully James will get home soon or the guy will stop burning crap up there and the smell will go away.

Been through a house fire myself, and evacuated once as well. Totally understand. Hope all is OK.
