help w getting my 2 yr old off morning/night bottles

By the recomendation of our pedi, I still gave my little guy a 6 oz milk bottle for wake up and bed time.  He wasn't even on the charts for weight (at 23 months, he's just over 22 lbs) so she didn't want me messing with the extra calories he needed.  Now- I still want him to have the calories which I will work in to his diet but  I need to get him off the bottle for his teeth's sake.  I tried to do a sippy instead this past weekend in the morning and he was not having it.

Walk me through this....offer the sippy in the am and just go straight to real breakfast if he resists?  Any suggestions?

Re: help w getting my 2 yr old off morning/night bottles

  • Up until a few months ago, Ben was still taking 3 bottles.  I had tried pretty much tried every sippy cup under the sun and he wanted no parts of milk out of any of them.  Someone then recommended to me to try the take and toss cups (Target has them).  One day, I gave him some milk in one of them at his second feeding instead of a bottle with no problem.  It's the morning and night bottles that he still wants.  I'm giving him until his second birthday (February 28th) and then I'm going to try and wean him.  Maybe try these sippies?  The woman who told me this had the same issue with her daughter and it worked for her too.

  • Try buying sippies with Thomas the train or his favorite character on it. That works sometimes. My son had no problems going to sippies and now he drinks 2% milk as recommended by doctor and then an hour later I give him his breakfast in the morning.
